7. ⦿ a cyst that originates by the
separation of the follicle from
around the crown of an unerupted
tooth.
⦿ Most common (developmental)
⦿ encloses the crown of an
unerupted tooth and is attached
to the tooth at the
cementoenamel junction

14. ⦿Treatment and prognosis:
◾Careful enucleation with tooth removal
◾Partial removal of the cyst (if eruption
feasible)
◾Excellent prognosis, rare recurrence…very
rarely; malignant transformation of the
lining

dentigerous cyst
⦿Develops as a result of
separation of the dental
follicle from around the
crown of an erupting tooth
that is within the soft
tissues overlying the
alveolar bone.

 Dec. mand. Central incisor
 1st perm. Molars
 decid. Max. incisors

23. ⦿ Clinically:
◾ Age: from infancy to old age (60%
between10-40y.)
◾ Mandible in 60-80% of cases (posterior)
◾ Small.. Asymptomatic; large…may have pain
or drainage
◾ Expand in an direction
◾ Multiple cysts may occur (associated with
Nevoid basal cell carcinoma ;or Gorlin
syndrome)

◾Thin friable wall
◾Tend to recur after
enucleation (about 30%)
◾Recurrence may occur after
a long period (10 y.)
◾Peripheral ostectomy or
cauterization (carnoy’s
solution)

filled cysts that are found
on the alveolar mucosa of
infants.
⦿ From remnants of dental
lamina
⦿ Common (up to half of
newborns)

◾ Multiple whitish papules on the alveolar
mucosa
◾ 2-3 mm
◾ Max.>Mand.
⦿ Histopath.
◾ thin, flattened epithelial lining with
a parakeratotic luminal surface. The
lumen contains keratinaceous
debris.
⦿ Treatment
◾ No need…ruptures spontaneously and
rarely seen after 3m.of age

◾ Asymptomatic
◾ 5th – 7th decade
◾ 75-80% at the mandibular lateral, canine, premolar area.
◾ Maxillary examples…the same area
⦿ Radiographically:
◾ Well circumscribed radiolucency lateral to the roots of
teeth.
◾ Mostly < 1 cm. in diameter
◾ Sometimes polycystic (botryoid)
◾ Radiographic features are not diagnostic (kerato., lateral
radicular)

features:
◾Predominantly intraosseous
◾Maxilla=mandible
◾65% in incisor and canine areas
◾Infant to elderly (mean=33y.)
◾Most are diagnosed in the 2nd -3rd
decade.

◾ Fibrous wall without
inflammation
◾ Flat interface
◾ Lining with varying
thickness
◾ Surface layer is cuboidal
to culumnar…sometimes
with cilia
◾ microcysts
