Keynote for Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries 2017
The theory and practice of digital libraries provides a long history of thought around how to manage knowledge ranging from collection development, to cataloging and resource description. These tools were all designed to make knowledge findable and accessible to people. Even technical progress in information retrieval and question answering are all targeted to helping answer a human’s information need.
However, increasingly demand is for data. Data that is needed not for people’s consumption but to drive machines. As an example of this demand, there has been explosive growth in job openings for Data Engineers – professionals who prepare data for machine consumption. In this talk, I overview the information needs of machine intelligence and ask the question: Are our knowledge management techniques applicable for serving this new consumer?

In 1989 the Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey convened the world's first conference on qualitative software, which brought together qualitative methodologists and software developers who debated the pros and cons of the use of technology for qualitative data analysis. The result was a book (Fielding & Lee (1991) Using Computers in Qualitative Research, Sage Publications), the setting-up of the CAQDAS Networking Project and many other conferences concerning the topics over the years.
This conference will be another opportunity for methodologists, developers and researchers to come together and debate the issues.There will be keynote papers by leading experts in the field, software support clinics and opportunities to present work in progress.

It is designed to help archivists and digital content producers ensure that TIFF files are fit for long term preservation, and is able to automatically suggest improvements and correct preservation issues. The team developing it has decades of experience working with image formats and digital preservation, and has leveraged the support of 60+ memory institutions to draft a new ISO standard proposal (TIFF/A) specifically designed for long term preservation of still-images. An open source community will be created and grown through the project lifetime to ensure its continuous development and success. Additional commercial services will be offered to make DPF Manager self-sustainable and increase its adoption.

I presented on some basics of the World Wide Web and why it's worth to preserve it, our work on non-expert tools to populate semantically enriched content, a current project to identify NZ native birds based on their calls that involves citizen science and contemporary deep learning using TensorFlow, a project that investigates the impact of online citizen science on the development of science capabilities of primary school children, and my collaboration with Adam Grener from the School of English, Film, Theater and Media Studies at VUW with whom I am working on computational tools for the literature studies.

OntoSoft: A Distributed Semantic Registry for Scientific Software

OntoSoft is a distributed semantic registry for scientific software. This paper describes three major novel contributions of OntoSoft: 1) a software metadata registry designed for scientists, 2) a distributed approach to software registries that targets communities of interest, and 3) metadata crowdsourcing through access control. Software metadata is organized using the OntoSoft ontology along six dimensions that matter to scientists: identify software, understand and assess software, execute software, get support for the software, do research with the software, and update the software. OntoSoft is a distributed registry where each site is owned and maintained by a community of interest, with a distributed semantic query capability that allows users to search across all sites. The registry has metadata crowdsourcing capabilities, supported through access control so that software authors can allow others to expand on specific metadata properties.

OntoSoft: A Distributed Semantic Registry for Scientific Software

OntoSoft is a distributed semantic registry for scientific software. This paper describes three major novel contributions of OntoSoft: 1) a software metadata registry designed for scientists, 2) a distributed approach to software registries that targets communities of interest, and 3) metadata crowdsourcing through access control. Software metadata is organized using the OntoSoft ontology along six dimensions that matter to scientists: identify software, understand and assess software, execute software, get support for the software, do research with the software, and update the software. OntoSoft is a distributed registry where each site is owned and maintained by a community of interest, with a distributed semantic query capability that allows users to search across all sites. The registry has metadata crowdsourcing capabilities, supported through access control so that software authors can allow others to expand on specific metadata properties.

In these slides, we discuss how LinkedIn implements a powerful dynamic policy enforcement engine, called ViewShift, and integrates it within its data lake. We show the query engine architecture and how catalog implementations can automatically route table resolutions to compliance-enforcing SQL views. Such views have a set of very interesting properties: (1) They are auto-generated from declarative data annotations. (2) They respect user-level consent and preferences (3) They are context-aware, encoding a different set of transformations for different use cases (4) They are portable; while the SQL logic is only implemented in one SQL dialect, it is accessible in all engines.
