Welcome and Thank You!
On behalf of the Oldham County Saddle Club, we want to welcome you to our
2015 Show Season! This year we are celebrating our 6th

Our mission is to promote and encourage care, riding, and enjoyment of horses
plus fun and friendship with others. Our goal for the 2015 season is to fund the
Oldham County Saddle Club Scholarship and our Horseman’s Fund.
Thank you to our wonderful sponsors for their contributions to make this book a
possibility; we hope that you find this booklet useful whether you are an exhibitor
or a spectator.
Thank you for your continued support and we wish all of you the best of luck.
Enjoy the Show!
Kindly,

HUNTER IN HAND
1. Equipment:
a. English headstall equipped with any acceptable single-rein English bit (see ENGLISH
PERFORMANCE specifications) and that complies with appropriate equipment rules for the age
of the horse shown. Notwithstanding the above, English bridle is mandatory on horses two years
old and older and plain leather halter is required on weanling and yearling horses.
b. For horses one year old and younger, halters are mandatory. The halter and lead must be halter
of plain leather. The chain on the lead may be over the nose or under the chin; however, no
chains are allowed in the horse’s mouth and no lip chains are allowed.
c. The use of a crop or bat is optional.
2. Attire:
a. Attire of the handler should permit free movement. Color may be chosen to complement horse,
but should be conservative. Suitable attire shall be a collared polo shirt or collared dress shirt
(solid colored and either white or another conservative color), vest, tie and gloves (optional).
Dress pants should be loose enough in which to run. If a belt is worn, it should be a plain belt,
not of western type or style. Jeans are forbidden. Running shoes or paddock boots are required.
3. Class Conduct:
a. Horses will be judged individually on the triangle, following a posted order.
b. The horses will approach the judging area (A) and set up for inspection in the “open” position
(i.e. with all four legs of the horse visible by the judge standing on either side of the horse). The
judge shall inspect each horse from the front, rear and both sides. Transmissible weakness
and/or conditions shall be counted strongly against animals (See Rule 713.A.3.b).
c. At the judge’s request, the horse will then walk the small triangle ABCA. The horse will continue
on at a trot following the large ADEA.
d. At the completion of the judging, the handler will lead the horse away from the judging area. As
one horse leaves, the next one will enter the judging area promptly.
e. When all horses in the class have completed the triangle, they may be lined up for judges to
place, or “ringing” (walking in a large group circle around the judges) may be used.
f. An exhibitor may show more than one horse in a class on the triangle. In this case, a helper may
assist in bringing the horses back for ringing or final inspection.

4. Scoring System: 60% movement, 30% conformation, 10% temperament.
5. If a horse knocks over a cone or marker, they are to be scored accordingly. This does not constitute
immediate disqualification but at the judge’s discretion can be penalized in the temperament or
movement score.
6. If a horse or exhibitor falls, they are to be scored accordingly. This does not constitute immediate
disqualification but at the judge’s discretion can be penalized in the temperament or movement score.
7. If a horse is off pattern either by completing the large triangle ADEA before the small triangle ABCA,
by not displaying the correct gait while completing the corresponding triangle or by not submitting to
inspection prior to completing the pattern, the entry shall be disqualified.
a. An appropriate penalty shall be assessed at the judge’s discretion for break of gait during
completion of the pattern, but this shall not constitute off pattern or immediate disqualification.

old and older and plain leather halter is required on weanling and yearling horses.

Dress pants should be loose enough in which to run. If a belt is worn, it should be a plain belt,
not of western type or style. Jeans are forbidden. Running shoes or paddock boots are required.
3. Class Conduct:

1. Equipment:

HALTER – Open to any handler exhibiting a mini, pony or horse. To be judged
on conformation of the horse per breed standards. Halter classes are divided
by gender and exhibitor (see below). No stallions in any Halter class. Horses are
shown in a suitable halter and are traveled before judges so that lameness and
quality of movement can be evaluated. Horses are judged on balance, structural
correctness, breed and sex characteristics and degree of muscling. Of these, bal-
ance is the most important. (Please review attire requirements.)

Champion will be selected by the judge and awarded. No placings after Grand
Champion (1st place). No entry fee.
GROOMING CLASS – Open to any handler; Open to mini, pony, or horse (No
stallions) – best “turned out/groomed” horse – braiding optional; to be presented
in any leather halter, show halter or suitable halter. This is not to be judged on
conformation. The class will not track. Follow directions of judge or ring steward.
Judges must use their discretion – the judge has permission to pick up feet, look
under/move mane/or tail, or touch horse for cleanliness.
OPEN PLEASURE DRIVING – Any Breed; Headers required in the line-up; this
class tests the horse’s ability to pull a two-wheeled cart and driver along the pe-
rimeter of the arena. The horse is exhibited at a walk and two speeds of trot called
park gait and road gait. The horse is judged on straight and free movement, man-
ners, and a bright expression while staying under the driver’s control at all times.
Horses must not break into a canter at any time.
SHOWMANSHIP – This class is designed to judge the showmanship skills of
the exhibitors. Judges evaluate the grooming and fitting of the horse or pony, and
expertise of the exhibitor in presenting the horse. Each exhibitor is required to
perform a pattern designed with emphasis on preciseness of pattern and degree
of confidence exhibited by the showman. Patterns are posted on the Club website
or a pattern book can be purchased in the Show Office.
LEADLINE CLASS – Open to any novice rider – 6 Years Old or Under. Exhibi-
tors must have a handler that walks with rider the entire time on a lead. Follow

directions of Judge or Ring Steward – arena can be shortened or made smaller to
allow judge to evaluate all exhibitors. All Entries receive a blue ribbon and small
prize.
WALK/WALK CLASS – Open to any rider that is learning to show – 10 & Under.
Exhibitors must walk on the rail both directions and line-up without assistance.
This class is to be judged and tied accordingly.  Appropriate riding tack to be used;
example – English saddle must have English bridle with appropriate English at-
tire; Western Saddle must have western bridle with appropriate Western attire.
(See tack clothing guidelines on Rule Sheet.) One adult attendant is allowed in
center ring with each entry without any device (towel, whip, etc). At the line up
adult may stand at entries head for safety as a header.
GREEN HORSE – A class for horses or ponies in their first year of showing. Open
to any seat and any exhibitor. Horse to work on the rail at a walk, trot, and/or
canter.
HUNTER UNDER SADDLE - A class for English riding disciplines in which
judges evaluate a hunter-type horse on the flat, at a walk, trot and canter. Empha-
sis is placed on smoothness of gait, free-flowing stride and willingness to perform.
A hunter should move in a long, low frame and have the ability to increase its
stride and cover ground with ease in a flowing movement. Those moving in an
artificial frame with quick, short or choppy strides are not desirable. The hunter
should have an interested expression and an alert eye. Hunters must be obedient
and should willingly respond to cues of the rider. When asked to extend the trot
or for a hand gallop, they should move forward strongly with appropriate forward
impulsion. See Rule Sheet for acceptable tack and attire. Classes are split by ex-
hibitor.
ENGLISH EQUITATION - Tests an adult’s or youth’s ability to ride–not the per-
formance of the horse. Riders to be judged as they travel the perimeter of the arena
performing gait changes at the judge’s discretion. Emphasis is placed on ability to sit
correctly, hold the correct riding posture and control the horse. (This is a rail only
class.)
ENGLISH EQUITATION – PATTERN ONLY – Tests on the ability to ride–not the
performance of the horse. Contestants work a predetermined pattern consisting of
maneuvers such as changing gaits; travel in a circle to the left or right; backing up
as well as posting on correct diagonal and counter-cantering. Emphasis is placed
on ability to sit correctly, hold the correct riding posture and control the horse on a
precise pattern. This is a pattern only class. No rail work to be performed. Patterns
posted on the Club website or a Pattern Book can be purchased in the Show Office.
It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to know the pattern before entering the show pen.
ENGLISH PLEASURE – Open to hunt seat or saddle seat styles, The horse is
usually ridden on contact with the rein, and the horse is penalized if it must be
ridden on strong contact, gapes its mouth, does not respond willingly to light
aids, or does not travel in balance. The horse should move straight, with a steady
rhythm and a free and flowing stride. The horse should not come behind the bit,
or travel too fast. To be shown at a walk trot, extended trot and canter. Judge has
64
OCSC 2015 Show Season.indd 65 3/18/15 11:28 AM
discretion to ask for a halt on the rail and/or back in the line-up. See Rule Sheet
for acceptable tack and attire.
WESTERN PLEASURE – Judging the horse on manners and suitability of the
horse for a relaxed but collected gait cadence and relatively slow speed of gait,
along with calm and responsive disposition. The horse is to appear to be a “plea-
sure” to ride and very comfortable, while being very smooth. Judge at his/her dis-
cretion can ask for the horses to halt on the rail and/or back in the line-up. Classes
are split by exhibitor. See Rule Sheet for acceptable tack and attire.
WESTERN EQUITATION – Designed to test the horsemanship abilities of riders
using western tack. Riders work around the perimeter of the arena performing
gait changes at the judge’s discretion. Judging focuses on the rider’s body position,
seat in the saddle and ability to control the horse. (This is a rail only class.)
WESTERN HORSEMANSHIP - PATTERN ONLY - Designed to test the horse-
manship abilities of riders using western tack. Riders must follow a prescribed
pattern of maneuvers at a walk, trot or lope. Judging focuses on the rider’s body
position, seat in the saddle and ability to control the horse. This is a pattern only
class. No rail work to be performed. Patterns posted on the Club website or a Pat-
tern Book can be purchased in the Show Office. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility
to know the pattern before entering the show arena.
PLEASURE (ANY SEAT)– Western or English – Open to any rider, split by age
groups – Horse or Pony. Emphasis on the mount being pleasurable and well
controlled by rider.
10 & UNDER – Any Seat– Western or English – Open to any rider 10 and under
– Horse or Pony. Emphasis on the mount being pleasurable and well controlled
by rider.
DISCIPLINED RAIL/COMMAND CLASS - Open – This is not a pleasure rail
class. This class is to show the ability of a highly trained horse. The class is judged
on performance, willingness, and ability to perform maneuvers. The class routine
shall be to perform work on the rail, and may include, but is not limited to: a
short walk, jog or slow lope; a hand gallop; Flying changes of lead; Starting into
a lope from a halt; Starting and traveling on the counter lope; Side pass both left
and right; Turn on forehand and turn on hindquarter; Dismount and mount from
either side; Stand quietly. Judge may ask for additional safe work.

on the horse’s willingness, ease and grace in negotiating the course. The other two
mandatory obstacles are riding over at least four logs or poles and one backing
obstacle. AQHA Trail Guidelines/Standards used.
