Hallowe’en - the good, the
bad, and the history
Hallowe’en comes from
the ancient Celtic festival
of Samhain.
Fear of Hallowe’en
is called
Samhainophobia.
Hallowe’en is short for
All Hallow’s Eve.
The first known
trick-or-treating
was in Canada in
1927.
Teng Chieh (猜燈謎), or
the Lantern Festival is
celebrated in China at the
same time as Halloween.
People hang lanterns in
the shapes of animals to
guide spirits back to their
earthly homes.
Children are twice as
likely to be killed in a
pedestrian or car
accident on Hallowe’en.
In Celtic times druids would light large fires to
keep the dead from coming back to Earth. This is
where bonfires originated.

Hallowe’en!
★ In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl's call
meant someone was about to die.
★ “Halloween” is short for “Hallows’ Eve” or “Hallows’ Evening,” which was the
evening before All Hallows’ (sanctified or holy) Day or Hallowmas on November 1.
★ In the Christian church, All Hallows’ Eve was the night before All Saints Day, which
was held on 1st November to honour all of the saints of the church. Gradually,
Halloween became a non-religious celebration, with some of the early customs
remaining.
★ Black and orange are typically associated with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of
strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest
and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a
reminder that Halloween once was a festival that marked the boundaries between
life and death.

Stephen Clarke holds the record for the

Halloween also called All Hallows’
Eve, takes place on 31 October. It
is a time when people dress up in
costumes, go trick-or-treating and
carve jack-o’-lanterns from
hollowed-out pumpkins. Several
ancient festivals held in the
autumn helped create the holiday
that exists today.
Scarecrows are very popular at
Halloween and usually people put
pumpkins as heads on the
scarecrow.
Ireland is typically believed to be
the birthplace of Halloween.In
ancient times, the holiday was
marked by customs started by
pagans, who were people who did
not believe in one god. It was
believed that on the last night of
October, the spirits of the dead
roamed the Earth. To scare them
away, the pagans lit bonfires...
In England they don’t do Halloween
they do Bonfire Night and they burn
old stuff and this is on November
the 5th. The Irish name for Happy

Hallowe’en is short for All Hallow’s Eve. The first known trick-or-treating was in Canada in 1927. Teng Chieh (猜燈謎), or the Lantern Festival is celebrated in China at the same time as Halloween. • 6. Hallowe’en! ★ In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl's call meant someone was about to die. ★ “Halloween” is short for “Hallows’ Eve” or “Hallows’ Evening,” which was the evening before All Hallows’ (sanctified or holy) Day or Hallowmas on November 1. ★ In the Christian church, All Hallows’ Eve was the night before All Saints Day, which was held on 1st November to honour all of the saints of the church. Gradually, Halloween became a non-religious celebration, with some of the early customs remaining. ★ Black and orange are typically associated with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a reminder that Halloween once was a festival that marked the boundaries between life and death. Sara

The rules of the competition state that the pumpkin must weigh less than 24 pounds and be carved in a traditional way, which requires at least eyes, nose, ears, and a mouth. In many countries, such as France and Australia, Halloween is seen as an unwanted and overly commercial American influence. According to tradition, if a person wears his or her clothes inside out and then walks backwards on Halloween, he or she will see a witch at midnight

Fifty percent of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared with 24% who prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% who preferred gum. Halloween also called All Hallows’ Eve, takes place on 31 October. It is a time when people dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating and carve jack-o’-lanterns from hollowed-out pumpkins. Several ancient festivals held in the autumn helped create the holiday that exists today. Scarecrows are very popular at Halloween and usually people put pumpkins as heads on the scarecrow. Ireland is typically believed to be the birthplace of Halloween. In ancient times, the holiday was marked by customs started by pagans, who were people who did not believe in one god. It was believed that on the last night of October, the spirits of the dead roamed the Earth. To scare them away, the pagans lit bonfires... In England they don’t do Halloween they do Bonfire Night and they burn old stuff and this is on November the 5th. The Irish name for Happy Halloween is Oíche Shamhna. HAPPY BY TOMMY

Boston, Massachusetts, holds the record for the most Jack O’Lanterns lit at once (30,128). Many Halloween customs and games that feature apples (such as bobbing for apples) and nuts date from this time. In fact, in the past, Halloween has been called An-Apple Night and Nut Crack Night. Scarecrows, a popular Halloween fixture, symbolize the ancient agricultural roots of the holiday. The Village Halloween parade in New York City is the largest Halloween parade in the United States.
