The Dynamic Earth Research Paper Assignment
This is to be a research-based paper in which you explore a specific aspect of an Earth science topic in more detail than is covered in the class. You are to find out what the experts think about the topic and report on the rationale for their understanding, that is, upon what experimental and observational evidence and logic do they base their conclusions.
You can choose any topic of interest to you that is related to the Earth science topics that we covered in class. However make sure that it is specific enough that you can cover it well in the paper. This should not be a general overview paper. Some sample topics are listed at the end, but you are not limited to these topics.
Your thesis in the paper should be supported by facts obtained from research. A minimum of four sources must be used. They should include at least one book other than the textbook or other reference book (either in print or in electronic format from the library database) or an article from peer-reviewed academic journals. Web-based materials should come from credible sources. University-related and government agency websites generally have credible scientific information, while personal and business-related sites should be treated with healthy skepticism. Although you may not find books that directly addresses the issue about which you are writing, you may find one that addresses necessary background or general supporting information about your topic. Reference material (e.g. encyclopedias, dictionaries, your textbook) do not count toward your four references, although you are welcome to use them.
You should credit your sources whenever you quote from or paraphrase a source. Additionally, you should always cite your source for any statements made in the essay that are not general knowledge (because you presumably obtained them from one of your sources). For instance if you state that 98 percent of all the fish in the ocean are green, you will want to cite your source.
A bibliography page, or works cited page, should be located on a separate page immediately following the body of your essay. It should contain the list of works used listed alphabetically by last name of lead author. Although I will not be extremely picky about the formatting of the works cited page, I do expect all the information needed to locate each source, and I expect it to roughly follow
the standard formatting used in composition classes. Be sure to include the date of access for URL’s.
The paper should be 5-8 pages long, typewritten, double spaced, and written in a standard (and legible) font (12 point Times New Roman for example). It is to be submitted electronically via Isidore, where it will be checked by Turnitin.com. The paper is due by the end of the last day of class (12/9/2016).

Follow the guidelines below when writing your paper. If you are not confident in your writing ability, I strongly recommend that you seek tutoring at the Purdue Writing Lab. This will give you an independent set of trained eyes to examine your draft, make editing suggestions, and in general improve your submission.
If you decide to do this, I suggest that you make your appointment at least 1-week prior to the due date to allow for edits and revisions. Your paper must be submitted according to the scheduled due date. Your paper will be submitted twice. The first time will be through the SafeAssign Blackboard tool for plagiarism review. The second submission will be through the Gradient Link, which will be provided.
Your paper should be between 2,000 and 2,500 words, and must include the following sections and subtopics:

Keep the audience interested by including a picture that enhances what you are saying but doesn't replace what you are saying.

The Dynamic Earth Research Paper Assignment
This is to be a research-based paper in which you explore a specific aspect of an Earth science topic in more detail than is covered in the class. You are to find out what the experts think about the topic and report on the rationale for their understanding, that is, upon what experimental and observational evidence and logic do they base their conclusions.
You can choose any topic of interest to you that is related to the Earth science topics that we covered in class. However make sure that it is specific enough that you can cover it well in the paper. This should not be a general overview paper. Some sample topics are listed at the end, but you are not limited to these topics.
Your thesis in the paper should be supported by facts obtained from research. A minimum of four sources must be used. They should include at least one book other than the textbook or other reference book (either in print or in electronic format from the library database) or an article from peer-reviewed academic journals. Web-based materials should come from credible sources. University-related and government agency websites generally have credible scientific information, while personal and business-related sites should be treated with healthy skepticism. Although you may not find books that directly addresses the issue about which you are writing, you may find one that addresses necessary background or general supporting information about your topic. Reference material (e.g. encyclopedias, dictionaries, your textbook) do not count toward your four references, although you are welcome to use them.
You should credit your sources whenever you quote from or paraphrase a source. Additionally, you should always cite your source for any statements made in the essay that are not general knowledge (because you presumably obtained them from one of your sources). For instance if you state that 98 percent of all the fish in the ocean are green, you will want to cite your source.
A bibliography page, or works cited page, should be located on a separate page immediately following the body of your essay. It should contain the list of works used listed alphabetically by last name of lead author. Although I will not be extremely picky about the formatting of the works cited page, I do expect all the information needed to locate each source, and I expect it to roughly follow
the standard formatting used in composition classes. Be sure to include the date of access for URL’s.
The paper should be 5-8 pages long, typewritten, double spaced, and written in a standard (and legible) font (12 point Times New Roman for example). It is to be submitted electronically via Isidore, where it will be checked by Turnitin.com. The paper is due by the end of the last day of class (12/9/2016).

BACKGROUND: The American Cancer Society (ACS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) collaborate to provide annual updates
on cancer occurrence and trends in the United States. METHODS: Incidence data were obtained from the CDC-funded and NCI-
funded population-based cancer registry programs and compiled by NAACCR. Data on cancer deaths were obtained from the
National Center for Health Statistics National Vital Statistics System. Trends in age-standardized incidence and death rates for all can-
cers combined and for the leading cancer types by sex, race, and ethnicity were estimated by joinpoint analysis and expressed as the
annual percent change. Stage distribution and 5-year survival by stage at diagnosis were calculated for breast cancer, colon and rec-
tum (colorectal) cancer, lung and bronchus cancer, and melanoma of the skin. RESULTS: Overall cancer incidence rates from 2008 to
2014 decreased by 2.2% per year among men but were stable among women. Overall cancer death rates from 1999 to 2015
decreased by 1.8% per year among men and by 1.4% per year among women. Among men, incidence rates during the most recent 5-
year period (2010-2014) decreased for 7 of the 17 most common cancer types, and death rates (2011-2015) decreased for 11 of the 18
most common types. Among women, incidence rates declined for 7 of the 18 most common cancers, and death rates declined for 14
of the 20 most common cancers. Death rates decreased for cancer sites, including lung and bronchus (men and women), colorectal
(men and women), female breast, and prostate. Death rates increased for cancers of the liver (men and women); pancreas (men and

that interplay and produce the wellness of the population within a given place. The article
discusses parental race differences and vulnerabilities of infant mortality rates through studying

found that the dynamic of child deaths continue to increase among the black community with
said improvement in the health sector impacting only the white population. Instead of genetics
being the main impact on child deaths, it is shown that race-driven prejudice and structural

Summary
This is a paper describing the results of an analytical research project, worth 25% of your total grade. Your paper should be 10-12 pages, double-spaced, exclusive of cover, title page, table of contents, endnotes and bibliography. Your paper must use APA formatting with the exception that tables and figures can be inserted at the appropriate location rather than added at the end. Paper Topic Selection
Prior to writing your paper, you must submit a short, ungraded, topic proposal. You should submit your intended research paper topic by the end of Session 3. The purpose of this preliminary milestone is to provide your instructor the opportunity to confirm the appropriateness of your proposed topic, sufficiently early in the course to allow for topic revision if necessary. It will be helpful if you include, with your proposed paper topic, the sort of research you intend to do and any specific sources you may have already found or plan to use in researching your topic. - 1. Oceans are in the news! This semester you are going to tune your eyes and ears to news stories specifically about the oceans, ocean pollution, marine life, and ocean exploration. Be sure to review comments from your News Report #1. Skills: exploring the news & media for quality scientific news. Learn to connect out-of-class information to in-class information. Spark interest in quality science reporting. Become aware of current events we can change or that impact us. Submission: A ~500 word write-up based on a news story related to the oceans. Date of article/news release should be after August 1, 2021 (no old news). Include full citation information of article/news item included at the top of your submission. Please be sure you are correctly citing your news source. Follow guides you have used in other classes or on the HCC library siteLinks to an external site. . Expectations: Find a news item of interest to you related to the wide topic of Oceanography. This should be a news story of substance (more than a couple paragraphs of text or more than 5 minutes of audio/video segment). Read the article/listen to the story carefully and consider how it relates to what we have been
