4. Fanselow has a beautiful image of lesson observation as a journey
towards discovery and self-knowledge (Ruth Wajnryb)
Here I am with my lens to
look at you and
your actions .But as I look at
you with my lens,
I consider you a mirror. I hope to
see myself in you
and through my teaching. When I
see myself, I find it
hard to get distance from my
teaching.
5. How can a teacher and an
observer benefit ?
Why an observation is not always
objective?
6. Before:
-Meet teachers and establish contact with them
-Explain why it’s beneficial to listen to the recording
of the lesson and analyze it
-Ask them if there is anything in particular they want
you to focus on
7. While listening:
- There is no ideal teaching methodology.(Jim Scrivener:
“There is no scientific basis yet for writing such a
description of an ideal teaching methodology. Instead, we can
observe teachers and learners at work and take note of
strategies and approaches that seem to be more beneficial…”)
-All teachers have different temperaments and personalities.
-Listen to some number of lessons conducted by this teacher

9. After(giving feedback)
Say thank you and prepare a teacher for discussion
It’s good idea to allow the teacher to start talking
Start with positive things, talk about strengths
Then ask the questions you have:
“tell me more about why…”
“how do you think what other possible ways to…
11. Try to talk about weaknesses use both :
directive (when teacher is unable
to self evaluate or lacks experience) and
non-directive manner:
“What if…?”
“I have a feeling it might be a good
idea if you…
Concentrate on 2-3 main weaknesses and give time
to improve it.
