The Pacific Foundation for Environmental Learning is a registered charity that was formed in 2009 to
support the ongoing success of the Outdoor School campus. The Foundation is overseen by North
Vancouver School District 44 and receives valuable input and guidance from the Outdoor School

our story
Building on four decades of delivering youth
leadership and direct learning experiences
Nestled in the Cheakamus
River Valley and
surrounded by temperate
rainforest, the Outdoor
School is the natural
place to learn, connecting
British Columbians to
their environment through
experiential education.
Situated on 420 acres of
ecological reserve land,
just minutes from the
Sea to Sky highway, the
Outdoor School is unique
among a handful of environmental learning centres
in Canada. Learning takes place daily in nature’s
classroom amongst 1,000 year-old red cedars and
a vast network of spawning channels - all under the
watchful eyes of wintering Bald Eagles.

Our multi-day programs reach 6,000 adults and
5,000 students every year. Using the cultural and
natural environment as a context, participants
engage in First

In the spirit of initiating change,
the Outdoor School was recently

School District of North Vancouver
has pledged $1 million in matching

I will hopefully always remember “if we look after the forest, the

“The awe and wonder I felt as a student at the Big House was passed on to my
students in Nunavut, and I recaptured my own sense of awe while learning from the
children and elders in Northern communities.” Analise Saely, Outdoor School Alumni

Sustainable Farm
Established in 1969, the
Outdoor School is now
poised to become an
International Centre of
Excellence for environmental
leadership and sustainability.
A sustainable campus renewal is
underway, with the vibrant new
Environmental Learning Centre
(ELC) at the heart. For the Outdoor
School this is a critical time - our
aging infrastructure is badly in need
of replacement. With no direct
funding from the B.C. Ministry of
Education, we need your help
now to preserve and revitalize
this provincial treasure. With your
generous support, the Outdoor
School will
b e c o m e
a hub of discovery for
learners of all ages, building
on a 40-year legacy of
connecting people, nature
and community through
education.

The ELC is the gateway to a renewed Outdoor School.
This natural learning space will welcome and engage
visitors of all ages, becoming a leading demonstration
facility and educational tool for sustainable living. It will offer
a nature gallery, multi-purpose,learning spaces, a dining
hall, and meeting facilities.
Already winning awards for environmental design, the ELC will
be a LEED Platinum certified building. We are working towards
the highest sustainability goals including:
• Generating on site energy to achieve net zero energy use
• Reducing carbon emissions to zero
• Reducing water use through recycling and efficient fixtures
• Using local, sustainably produced food
