MAKING MONEY
THROUGH ONLINE MUSIC
DISTRIBUTION
 The majority of music now being created, distributed, shared, bought
and discovered is happening outside the traditional music industry.
 The music industry as we have known it is in transition, and the
emerging model is incredibly exciting, larger and far more profitable
than it has ever been.
DIGITAL SALES
 Every artist should have a platform where digital
music can be conveniently sold to maximize profits.
 Third party retailers are an alternative option, but
should be focused on in a secondary manner.
PRIVATE RETAIL
 Increasing Searchability Through Key Terms
 Include a PLAY Button
 Offer Free Digital Downloads
 Have Digital Downloads for Sale at Competitive Pricing
 Incorporate Physical Options
 Digital Merchandising
 PDF Files
 Video Files
 Images
 Audio Files
 Add Album Information and Descriptions
 Offer Additional Purchase Options
INCREASING DIGITAL SALES THROUGH
PRIVATE RETAIL
 Third party retailers are a platform to sell music,
not a marketing tool.
 The best way to get more targeted people visiting
and interested in your iTunes sales page is to link it
from your own website.
THIRD PARTY RETAIL
 Creating Public Playlists
 Album Reviews and Ratings
 Communicate with Fan Base
 iTunes Affiliate Program
INCREASING DIGITAL SALES THROUGH
THIRD PARTY RETAIL
 Although Per-Stream Payouts Tend to be Small, They Can Add
Up Over Time.
 Streaming Sites Should Always Be Used More to Gain More
Exposure, Rather Than to Accumulate Profits.
STREAMING
 ANY time an artist’s work is played on an online distribution
service that service must pay royalties to the artist.
 By signing up for a free SoundExchange account, any artist
can be sure he or she is collecting any royalties which are
due.
 Through this process, the organization allows online distributors to
stream content in exchange for the statutory royalty fee- a fixed rate
for each play.
 In turn, all the royalties collected by SoundExchage are then
distributed to the artists providing the content.
 This agreement does not limit an artist’s right to negotiate for a
higher royalty payment per play with the distributors themselves!
