How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

✅What is C++ Programming?
C++ is an enhanced and extended version of C programming language, developed by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1979 as part of his Ph.D. project. Bjarne developed what he called ‘C with Classes’ (later renamed C++) because he felt limited by the existing programming languages that were not ideal for large scale projects. He used C to build what he wanted because C was already a general-purpose language that was efficient and fast in its operations.

✅What is C++ Programming?
C++ is an enhanced and extended version of C programming language, developed by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1979 as part of his Ph.D. project. Bjarne developed what he called ‘C with Classes’ (later renamed C++) because he felt limited by the existing programming languages that were not ideal for large scale projects. He used C to build what he wanted because C was already a general-purpose language that was efficient and fast in its operations.

- Alfalfa can only be controlled by fall spraying the year prior to tree planting. Boom spray Roundup Ultra at 1.5l/ha + 2,4,D at 0.5l/ha, before the first killing frost. Can use Vision as well.
- Site was boom sprayed year previous to planting (early November). Site was a well managed hay field with no history of cattle grazing. Band sprayed with simazine at 3kg/ha at planting. Photo taken June 25 so we still had excellent control. Alfalfa was not killed due to late spraying, but in low enough numbers to prevent suppression of trees.
- Site in early October
- Typical old field site – grasses, goldenrod, asters. Very heavy thatch, in some sections 1 – 1.3m high. Site was active cattle pasture up to 2007. Prescription called for mowing in 2009, band spray simazine at planting at 5.5kg/ha, Monitor and mow in between rows only if required. Site had abundant thistle, field bindweed, vetch and black medick, which would have been released by the removal of the grasses.
- Field bindweed and vetch – which can be a big problem for seedlings.
- Flowable simazine has 480 – 500g/l. To get an application rate of 5.5kg/ha you need 11.5l/ha. Bare ground rates are higher than those on established thatch. An application rate of 3.5kg/ha on sandy soil is fine if the site is sprayed the fall previous with glyphoste and/or cultivated. That rate on heavy thatch will provide poor control. Bare ground Thatch Sands 3.5kg/ha 4.5 – 5.5kg/ha Loams 5.5kg/ha 6.5kg/ha Clays 7kg/ha 7kg/ha You cannot kill deep rooted perennials like alfalfa, milkweed, or asters. La and Le are sensitive over 3.5kg/ha. Heavy rates carry a high risk of groundwater contamination on sandy soils.
- Fall over spraying. Use Glyfos at 2.4l/ha (1l/ac) can also use 2,4-D amine at 0.5l/ha. Vision should be ok based on the label. Glyfos, Vision and 2,4-D state that the product is “not recommended” for over spraying. But have a listing under “post directed sprays in established plantations” Roundup original worked as well. DO NOT use any of the new Roundup formulations. Spruce harden first (late Sept – early October), White pine later (mid to late October), larches last (late October to early November). Do not overspray Cw. When mixing these species together in a plantation you limit your herbicide options.
- Drainage issues – mounding. We don’t due it due to the cost and lack of equipment. If it is too wet to plant move on. Young’s teeth for hawthorns and compacted soils – too expensive with the current 50MTP funding formula.
- J+2 Pr on moderate thatch, with a landowner who actually mows. Scalping – was very common on machine planted sites in the past. Can work well if set up properly – 1 season of control only. Common site preparation method in the southern US, but sites scalped months ahead of time. Issues with contours and erosion.
- Tubes and mulches are very expensive and not a realistic option when dealing with numbers over 500. A clean, worked field with a cover crop is the best option for those who insist on no spraying (even though the site required spraying to prepare it), and those willing to accommodate it.
