The Key to A 
Well-Balanced 
Diet 
More than 1/3 of adults are obese 
and another 1/3 are overweight. 
Overweight and obese individuals are 
at risk for the development of heart disease, 
certain cancers, diabetes, and other 
life-threatening illnesses.

Many Americans want to 
lose weight, but finding a 
starting place often proves 
challenging. 
It’s all about portion sizes. 
Perhaps the most obvious 
reason our nation keeps 
getting heavier is our ever-expanding 
portions. Eating 
out can be a treacherous 
experience for dieters. 
Serving sizes in restaurants 
tend to set the standard for 
the amount of food we eat 
at home and soft drinks 
serving sizes continue to 
grow. We welcome the 
federal government’s 
announcement this week. 
Nutrition Facts Labels on 
foods will be updated for the 
first time in 20 years and will it 
reflect more accurate 
calorie information and 
include bigger, easier to 
read fonts. 
Where do our calories come 
from? 
The National Health and 
Nutrition Examination Survey 
(NHANES), an official U.S. 
government program that 
assesses the health and 
nutritional status of adults 
and children, identified 
which foods are the top 
sources of calories in 
Americans’ diets.

All of the top ten foods are 
calorie-dense and lack a 
variety of necessary 
nutrients. That isn’t to say 
that all of those foods are 
“bad for you,” but they 
don’t have as many health 
benefits as fruits and 
vegetables, which can be 
eaten in generous 
proportions with few 
negative health 
repercussions. Focusing on a 
diet consisting of a wide 
range of foods that are low 
in calories and fat, but 
contain ample nutrients, is 
an important step toward 
weight maintenance or loss. 
Surprisingly, some foods 
thought to contribute to 
obesity are not major 
sources of calories in the 
diet. For example, candy 
only accounts for around 2% 
of Americans’ caloric intake. 
Knowing where Americans 
as a whole are consuming 
most of their calories should 
be an aid in identifying the 
foods in your own diet that 
are contributing the most 
calories. Cutting back on 
those foods and replacing 
them with nutrient dense low 
calorie options is the most 
useful step to losing or 
maintaining your weight.

  • 1. Moderation: The Key to A Well-Balanced Diet More than 1/3 of adults are obese and another 1/3 are overweight. Overweight and obese individuals are at risk for the development of heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, and other life-threatening illnesses. 1 Many Americans want to lose weight, but finding a starting place often proves challenging. It’s all about portion sizes. Perhaps the most obvious reason our nation keeps getting heavier is our ever-expanding portions. Eating out can be a treacherous experience for dieters. Serving sizes in restaurants tend to set the standard for the amount of food we eat at home and soft drinks serving sizes continue to grow. We welcome the federal government’s announcement this week. Nutrition Facts Labels on foods will be updated for the first time in 20 years and will it reflect more accurate calorie information and include bigger, easier to read fonts. Where do our calories come from? The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), an official U.S. government program that assesses the health and nutritional status of adults and children, identified which foods are the top sources of calories in Americans’ diets. 2 All of the top ten foods are calorie-dense and lack a variety of necessary nutrients. That isn’t to say that all of those foods are “bad for you,” but they don’t have as many health benefits as fruits and vegetables, which can be eaten in generous proportions with few negative health repercussions. Focusing on a diet consisting of a wide range of foods that are low in calories and fat, but contain ample nutrients, is an important step toward weight maintenance or loss. Surprisingly, some foods thought to contribute to obesity are not major sources of calories in the diet. For example, candy only accounts for around 2% of Americans’ caloric intake. Knowing where Americans as a whole are consuming most of their calories should be an aid in identifying the foods in your own diet that are contributing the most calories. Cutting back on those foods and replacing them with nutrient dense low calorie options is the most useful step to losing or maintaining your weight. National Consumers League
