3. Introduction
• Good nutrition supports overall health and
helps maintain the immune system. It also
helps people with HIV maintain a healthy
weight and absorb HIV medicines. ... The HIV
medicine prevents HIV from destroying the
immune system. A healthy diet also helps
strengthen the immune system and keep
people with HIV healthy.
4. Concept Of Nutrition
• Nutrition is defined as the processes by
which an animal or plant takes in and utilises
food substances. Essential nutrients include
protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins, minerals
and electrolytes.Nutrition is essential for
growth and development, health and
wellbeing. Eating a healthy diet contributes
to preventing future illness and improving
quality of immune system.
5. Concept of Nut...
• Other nutrients, including protein, Vitamin
A, vitamin B6, folate, selenium, iron, as well
as prebiotics and probiotics, also may
influence immune response and play a role
in a healthful eating style.
6. Concept of HIV
• HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus
that attacks cells that help the body fight
infection, making a person more vulnerable to
other infections and diseases. ... If left
untreated, HIV can lead to the disease AIDS
(acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
8. Role of Nutrition on HIV
• Micronutrients are important for
immunity, growth, and psychomotor
development, because they catalyze many
processes in the body and are essential
components of specific tissues. For
example, iron is part of hemoglobin,
which transports oxygen in the body;
vitamin A is known as the anti-infective
vitamin, and a high dose is provided
every 6 months to young children as a
child survival intervention;
9. Cont...
• Adequate and appropriate nutrition is
required for all cells to function optimally
and this includes the cells in the immune
system. An “activated” immune system
further increases the demand for energy
during periods of infection, with greater
basal energy expenditure during fever.
10. Dietary Recommendation
• Protein foods includes seafood, lean meat,
poultry, eggs, beans and peas, soy products
and unsalted nuts and seeds.
• Vitamin A foods such as sweet potatoes,
carrots, broccoli, spinach, red bell peppers,
apricots, eggs or foods labeled "vitamin A
fortified," such as milk or some cereals.
11. • Vitamin E works as an antioxidant,
neutralizes free radicals and may improve
immune function. Include vitamin E in your
diet with fortified cereals, sunflower seeds,
almonds, vegetable oils (such as sunflower or
safflower oil), hazelnuts and peanut butter
• Zinc helps the immune system work properly.
Zinc can be found in lean meat, poultry,
seafood, milk, whole grain products, beans,
seeds and nuts.
12. Conclusion
• Adequate nutritional status supports
immunity and physical performance. Weight
loss, caused by low dietary intake (loss of
appetite, mouth ulcers, food insecurity),
malabsorption, and altered metabolism, is
common in HIV infection.
