The school was founded 7 years ago with a mission to provide outdoor education integrating science, technology, and life skills. The surrounding trees provided a majestic environment for learning. However, the government marked the trees for removal for a road expansion project, upsetting the school community. To prepare for the trees' removal and bring awareness, the school planted new trees and created a large multi-material collage artwork using recycled materials to depict their message of environmental protection. The school community continues to view the artwork daily as a reminder of their message.

Tapovan school was visualised and initiated 7 years ago by it's founders with high ideals and
a mission to impart and add on 'education out side the four walls' integrating science,
technology and life skills to rural children. The very ambience with 70 to 80 year old trees
lining the compound wall, The majestic look, breeze and fresh air they generate is the
greatest asset to the entire surroundings.
But Aghast! Two years ago as in any road expansion case, Govt marked yellow X mark on all
the trees declaring that they are to be chopped shortly. The entire school team were
shattered. Our principal and founders, represented the case to several Govt bodies with
alternate suggestions. But in vain! Again the officials' move started once again to chop the
trees. HELPLESS INDEED! We finally thought of an alternative idea from our side, knowing
very well that dooms day is ahead and we should now become proactive and do some
damage control.
IMAGINE :
We have thought of planting trees leaving the road widening width area ensuring that
they grow well enough before we lose the existing ones. We contacted KARNATAKA
POLLUTION BOARD, who inturn with the support of TREES FOR FREE and CIPLA etc
supported us in planting trees along the length of our compound wall measuring 160 feet,
leaving space for widening of road.

2. After planting trees, though relaxed a bit, excited students did not stop at it. All of us
together thought of an idea to permanently record our anguish of disturbed times.
Then our principal (creative head) insisted that we should create 'Best from waste'. We just
finished term exams and collected relevant unused material from all our junk which
included a 15 feet by 5 feet flex banner that is non bio degradable. That became the
budding artists' canvas. Using coconut bark, bird nests, peacock feathers, old Saree rags,
plastic carry bags, paper cut outs etc, all of us including teachers created a marvellous
theme on the canvas in our drive to bring awareness to all the visitors . While doing this
multi material 'Theme based collage' even our school sub staff got involved and supplied the
needed material and ideas where ever necessary. (video and photos are enclosed)
Now, every day as we climb up and down the stairs to go to our Classes, we spend some
time looking at it. We hate the Monster, we created of the dying tree and turn our face
towards the lovely tree full of life!
