- Webinars are a great way to stay up to date for busy nurses. Webinars can be viewed in the comfort of your own home, which can ease the problem of busy nurses trying to find the time to attend conferences or seminars (Williams, R. D., 2009).
- A webinar is a live online interaction involving multiple locations connected bytelephonelines and/or the internet,where viewers can submit questions and comments while discussing the content online. Usually besides having both audio and image connection, it is common for the presenter to have a power point or slide presentation. Once logged into the webinar, you will be able to hear the speaker and watch his or her Power Point on your screen.With shrinking budgets as well as money for travel, many schools as well as employers are turning to the use of “Webinars.” With webinars, online learning opportunities will become available for everyone who has access to a computer (Fredrick, K.,2011). Another type of webinar is a web focus group. Participants can volunteer their thoughts and ideas from the comfort and convenience of their home, office, or anywhere else they choose to go online., but instead of having to start at a fixed time, they can participate whenever they wish (American Nurse Today).

- The nursing profession requires a person to be knowledgeable, compassionate, andcaring towards others. A nurse must be able to make quick decisions and have good interpersonal skills. Retention of new RN’s is essential. It is projected that by 2025, the shortage of nurses will have climbed to 260,000. With advances in medicine, the patient has become more complex for nurses, which in turn requires more of their time as well as advanced critical thinking skills. Specialized knowledge and skills are needed in order for nurses to provide appropriate care (Buerhaus, P., Staiger, D., & Auerbach, D., 2008).Webinars can be found on the web for just about any topic.
- Becoming a participant in your own healthcare is a new concept for some, and can have long term benefits. According to the American Medical Association (AMA), teaching patients how to manage their care by engaging in reliable technology will help them to manage their own conditions better (AMA, 2010).
- Advantages:you don’t have to travel hundreds or thousands of miles to take an educational course you don’t have to spend your time and money on travel as you would to go to a conference, and you don’t have to leave your work for a few days you can learn from your own home you don’t have to download any extra software: everything is working in the window of a standard internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari etc.) if you missed a webinar for any reason, you can usually download it from a special server, or get the readers noteseverything is very simple! You can connect to the webinar feed just by a few clicks! you can connect from anywhere in the world! the price is usually affordable! (Lifexpert, 2009).
- Disadvantages:Some people prefer live interaction that you would get in a classroomYou cannot get visual cues from the instructor (unless it is via a webcam)Computer skills are helpful to knowThe cost may be an issue for some people (Lifexpert, 2009).A webinar would not be advantageous for the hearing impaired unless an adaptable device could be utilized. It would also not be beneficial for a person who is computer illiterate. Most webinars also require a credit or debit card for payment and if a person did not have either of these for payment then they would not be able to take the class.
- Meeting professional standards is necessary for delivering education by way of a webinar. Professional development must integrate evidence based practice and practice based evidence. DEVELOPING THE PRESENTATION • Avoid using video clips--these have an extremely high rate of technical failure.• Use more graphics than words; 55% of learners are visual learners.• Start with a strong opener to grab participants' attention. It is more effective to start with, "Welcome! You are in for a treat! You are about to learn…" as opposed to "Good morning. Today I will be…"• Don't tell the participants what you are going to do; tell them what they are going to experience. For example, "You will learn about the four methods of widget making" instead of "I will review the four methods of widget making." The use of the word you has been proven to increase audience engagement.BEFORE THE WEBINAR • Prepare yourself and your environment to eliminate extraneous noise and distractions. For example, place a note on your door that states, "Do not disturb. Webinar presentation in process."• Use a series of looping slides to convey important information and foster participant engagement while waiting for your presentation to begin. These slides should communicate:• when the session will begin• the conference dial-in number• your photo, name, and title• learner objectives• what to do in case of problems• how to ask questions and answer polls• quotes from past participants• fun facts related to the topic being presented• Send a reminder e-mail twice--the day before the webinar and 1 hour before the webinar.• Consider soliciting questions before the webinar (e.g., as part of the registration process).DURING THE WEBINAR • Plant a question every 6 to 10 minutes. This can be done by having the moderator ask the question, by polling the group, or by saying, "We've covered XYZ so far. I would like to pause and ask, what are your questions?"• Every 15 to 20 minutes, have the moderator reintroduce the speaker(s). For example, "We are approximately 15 minutes into today's webinar, (give title), presented by (name the speaker)."• Use a filler slide (e.g., a logo or related photo) when transitioning to a new topic or a new presenter.• Halfway through the presentation, have the moderator or speaker summarize what has been covered so far.• Always summarize at the end.• Consider a slide with takeaway points.AFTER THE WEBINAR • Always conclude with a post-webinar survey. This can be done either at the end of the Session or via e-mail after the webinar.• Send follow-up e-mails to all registered participants, those who attended and those who signed up but did not attend (Guanci, G., 2010).
