This document discusses the criteria for defining a profession and whether nursing meets those criteria. It outlines Lucie Kelly's criteria, which include specialized knowledge from higher education, autonomy in work, intellectual problem-solving skills, and self-regulation. The document argues that nursing meets these criteria through requirements for degrees, the nursing process of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care, and accountability through licensing.
The document discusses the experience of a student nurse serving as the charge nurse for a clinical day. It was very different than just caring for assigned patients as it involved responsibility for all patients and students on the floor. As charge nurse, familiarization with most patients and being available to assist was required. It also required patience, knowledge of everything happening in the unit, rounding in each room, and helping students learn. Effectively communicating with the team was important as the charge nurse.
The Role Of Rubies Nursing And NursingLaura Martin
The document discusses the role of a nurse working with Rubies Nursing and caring for both
moderate and highly mentally ill patients in aging and hospital facilities. As a nurse, it was important
to apply empathy, obtain informed consent, show resilience, and provide continuity of care to
patients, though there were many challenges not covered by those four areas. The document also
touches on the importance of developing therapeutic relationships with patients through empathy.
The document discusses the themes of death and challenges to religious faith in Rudolfo Anaya's novel Bless Me, Ultima. As a young boy, the main character Antonio witnesses two deaths - of Lupito on a bridge and later of Narciso. These traumatic experiences cause Antonio to question concepts like God's fairness and justice. He wonders why a compassionate God would allow evil people to kill good people like Narciso. Antonio is also torn between his mother's wish for him to become a priest and his father's dream of moving to California, adding to his internal struggles around faith and identity.

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
AI Trends in Creative Operations 2024 by Artwork Flow.pdfmarketingartwork
Creative operations teams expect increased AI use in 2024. Currently, over half of tasks are not AI-enabled, but this is expected to decrease in the coming year. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool currently. Business leaders are more actively exploring AI benefits than individual contributors. Most respondents do not believe AI will impact workforce size in 2024. However, some inhibitions still exist around AI accuracy and lack of understanding. Creatives primarily want to use AI to save time on mundane tasks and boost productivity.

Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search IntentLily Ray
1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.
2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections.
3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.

Nursing As A Profession Essay
1. Nursing as a Profession Essay
Nursing as a Profession Lisa Renfrow Oklahoma Wesleyan University Nursing as a Profession The question of whether the practice of nursing is
considered a profession or an occupation is an ongoing debate, much like the ongoing debate over what defines a profession. Several scholars have
outlined criteria for considering an occupation to be a profession. Given a list of scholars and their criteria for what characteristics define a
profession, I have chosen the list formulated by Lucie Kelly, RN, PhD, FAAN. Although the scholars' works seem to share similar criteria and any
could be selected for comparison, I have chosen Kelly's criteria based on her background in the nursing profession. In addition to...show more content...
66). The third characteristic of a profession, according to Kelly, is that the service involves intellectual activities and that accountability is an
important feature of those activities (Chitty & Black, 2011, p. 66). I believe nursing also meets these requirements through the nursing process. In
order to provide care for an individual, a nurse must assess the problem, decide on an approach (or plan of care), and implement that plan. The nurse
has to be able to evaluate the outcome of those actions and adjust the plan accordingly. Autonomy is an important part of this individual responsibility.
Nurses are held accountable for their individual actions by their employers, patients, and the public. Registered nurses today are required to meet strict
educational standards before applying for licensure. Kelly's fourth criterion requires practitioners to be educated in institutes of higher learning (Chitty
& Black, 2011, p. 66). Associate or baccalaureate degrees are the most common education levels for registered nurses. Some diploma programs are
still being run in hospitals, but their numbers are steadily declining (Chitty & Black, 2011, p. 149). Graduate degree programs focused on education,
research, and advanced practice provide opportunities for nurses to progress in their careers. The fifth characteristic of a profession is the one that I
think is most debated. It states that practitioners are relatively independent and regulate

positions of authority and stature in our modern society. These changes in the profession are attributed to the many nurse theorists who devoted their
lives to the improvement of patient care. Through their theoretical advancements, the public perception of nursing has gone from dismissive to
reverential. Today, our culture considers the nursing profession to be one of the most rewarding and respected career paths an individual can pursue.
Through a review of one such patient theorist, Dorothea Orem, one can witness this change in the perception of the nursing profession. As a first
semester student in a professional nursing course of study, Orem has already influenced my personal nursing philosophy. Definition of Professional
Nursing Merriam Webster defines a profession as "a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill" or "a calling requiring specialized
knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation." Respectively, the American Nurses Association (2010c) currently defines nursing as
"the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and
treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations" (p.10). Combining the definitions

By the 1940's many more tasks and procedures were being performed by nurses as a result of the introduction of new innovations in health care.
Nursing functions then included blood pressure measurement, suctioning in a variety of conditions, transfusion assistance, oxygen administration,
medication injection, and other more sophisticated techniques (Dennison 1942). With the advent of new drugs, new techniques, and new technologies,
the patient care of today is significantly different from that of Florence Nightingale's time. As nursing stands poised between the past and the future, we
must not forget that the central goal of all nursing practice is to improve the quality of life and relieve suffering (Chitty, 2001).
The core of nursing emphasizes the facilitation of healing, prevention of complications, and the promotion of health, but it should also address
psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient. As nurses, we should incorporate a whole–person approach into our daily practice. Whole–person
perspective focuses on improving a person's psychological and spiritual health, in addition to their physical health. In other words, it views an
individual as a whole entity whose body and mind are interconnected. In Watson's theory, she addresses the mind, body, and spirit of the person, while

10. Why Nursing Is A Profession Essay
Nursing Then and Now: Ever Changing with the Times There are many different ways to describe nursing and why nursing is a profession.
Everyone has their own way of describing it. Not everyone started nursing for the same reason, everyone has their own reasoning. It makes people
unique when they are able to tell their own story of why they wanted to start nursing or even when they have their own view point of nursing and
how the future is changing. My Choice at the Nursing Profession Everyone has different reasons why they would start any kind of career. My
reasoning to start the profession of nursing would be because of my mother and grandmother. They were both certified nursing assistants and I
wanted to be just like them, because I look up to both of these women. When they would talk about some of their experiences I remember thinking,
"Oh that sounds like fun". I have also always enjoyed helping people and making sure that they were okay. Once I became a certified nursing assistant
because I knew that I would be helping out people that needed help, it was a great feeling. It also made me feel well because it meant that I am making
someone else's life easier. When I was little I was always asked that one question that all little kids get asked, "What do you want to be when you grow
up?" I would always respond saying, "I want to be a nurse". I would always play with Barbie's, or baby dolls. While playing I would always take care

The Development of Nursing as a Profession Throughout history, society has considered women to be the natural caregivers of children, family, and
community. Women were naturally thought of as nurses because the act was said to be an extension of their role in the home. They were called in to
homes to help deliver babies or as wet nurses to breastfeed. In the 1800's, women began taking care of soldiers. It was then that Florence Nightingale
cared for soldiers in the Crimean War. During this time she revolutionized the role by setting standards of cleanliness and reducing infection. The
legacy of nursing continues to be enriched by those who continue to follow the example of nursing pioneers. They refuse to be bound by others' views

A professional makes deliberate choices where others have choices made for them or they simply react to what comes their way (Rutledge, 2011).
Development of Nursing as a Profession The earliest nurses never attended nursing school; they were often nuns or other women who provided
care for the sick, poor, or homeless without family support (The history of Nursing, 2017). During the 18th and 19th centuries, the nursing
profession expanded to include care of soldiers during many prominent wars (The History of Nursing, 2017). Florence Nightingale was a nurse
during the Crimean War. The conditions she found soldiers in were deplorable. At this time she found that keeping these soldiers clean would lead
to healing. She also began tending to them at all hours of the day. Upon her return to England, she wrote a report on her findings that helped reform
health care. Years later, she started the Nightingale School for Nurses. After this several nursing schools began in the United States and were all
founded on Nightingale's ideas. The Civil War gave enormous impetus to the building of hospitals and to the development of nursing as a
credentialed profession (Weathorford, 2010). One of the pioneers during this time was Clara Barton. By serving during the war she understood the
need for clothing, food and shelter. She developed The Red Cross to be a program to aid those affected by

Philosophy of Nursing Everyone's values and beliefs about the profession of nursing are all different. The four concepts of nursing are interrelated
and all mean something different to every person, too. Throughout this paper, I will be reflecting on my values and beliefs about nursing through the
four concepts while comparing them to a nursing theorist with views that are most similar to my own. My Values and Beliefs of Nursing I choose
nursing as my future career because I enjoy working with others, helping others feel better, and educating people. These three topics are all involved
in what nursing is. I believe that nursing is focused on the holistic care of individuals and their families in order to achieve and maintain an optimal
level of health, a great quality of life, and comfort. This is done through the promoting healthy living, providing a safe environment, preventing illness,
and the caring for the individual and the family. My Views of the Nursing Concepts After evaluating what the nursing concepts mean to me, I found
that they are most similar to Florence Nightingale's theory. For the first concept of nursing, I think it is the holistic care of individuals to provide an
optimal level of health and function, comfort, safety, and education. With holistic care, nurses focus on the mind, body, and spirit. Not only does
nursing deal with caring for the individual, but also education is a large part of nursing. To me, the second concept of nursing,

Although nursing can be a very physical endeavor, it carries with it responsibilities that are strictly intellectual in nature. For instance, walking into a
room to assess a patient, you have to have the knowledge of human anatomy, normal characteristics, normal vital signs, normal systems responses, etc.
This is all taught and (hopefully) learned in nursing school.
Nursing has a very strong internal organization of nurses that have joined together over the years into organizations such as the American Nursing
Association, WVNA, WVSNA, and various other state & national organizations. Not all nursing jobs are physical, some are almost strictly intellectual,
such as an educator, case manager, and instructor. There are staff nurses that I work with who are motivated by the fact that they are helping others.
They are energized and encouraged by just knowing that the patient?s life was saved by them. This is a motivation for entering the profession and also
for staying in it when the work gets rugged and the money tight.

14. A Reflection On The Nursing Profession
Asking someone to depict a nurse, what will they tell you? The stance that the nursing profession is icomposed of angelic people in starched white
uniforms, primarily women, whose main focus was patient care and following doctor's orders. This image, though iconic and attractive to some, is
not accurate when applied to modern nurses. These people need and have far more capabilities, knowledge and education, as well as, the caring
personality and character traits befitting one charged with the care of others. Is there some kind of checklist that will tell me if I will be a good nurse?
Absolutely not! Self–reflection and awareness of the expectations and qualities that are required to be successful as a nurse will go a long way in
helping one determine if nursing is in their destiny. Motivation. Every individual nurse has their own reasons for making their career choice. Some
consider it a calling. They are compelled to care for and nurture other human beings. There are individuals that want the rewarding feelings from
positive outcomes. Others are motivated because of flexible scheduling, monetary reasons and/or job security. Then there are some people like me,
who have experienced extended time in a medical facility and experienced excellent care or poor care for themselves or a loved one. My husband's

There are many different nursing theories that are significant to nursing practice, because they help nurses to examine what is already known, and
what additional knowledge and skills are required in variety of nursing situations. They provide basis for nursing practice, as well as some
additional tools, that help with delivery of better care to patients and caregivers. Finally, nursing theories improve professional status for nurses and
provide guidance and direction for research and education (Colley, 2003). In today's world, it is essential to incorporate nursing theory into practice.
Patricia Benner, through her work, "has provided essential understanding of how knowledge and skills are acquired and directly applied to nursing
practice, education, research and administration" (Altmann, 2007, p. 114). According to Benner's model of skill acquisition, "the nurse passes through
five stages of career development, novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient and expert" (English, 1993, p.387). Specific patterns of behavior,
thinking, and performance is present in each stage. The most experience is associated with the expert nurse and the least experience is possessed by
the novice nurse (Benjamin, 2007). This model is based on ascending level of proficiency and the key concepts of this model are: competence, skill

great example of the faith that the public has in nurses and the positive perception that nurses have in the eyes of the public. We can use this to our
advantage when it comes to communicating with the public. I believe the public would welcome hearing from nurses and listening to their stories more
often if only we offer them. The opening statement in "From Silence to Voice" states "envision how things would be if the voice and visibility of
nursing were commensurate with the size and importance of nursing in health care" (Buresh & Gordon, 2006, p.11). The size and importance of
nursing as a profession is huge. If you have any doubts about that, just think how the healthcare industry would be crippled without nurses. The silence
of nursing means that nurses are not speaking out about the services they provide, they are not speaking to the public about the crises they face such as
staffing shortages and decreased wages. Nurses keep their mouths closed when it comes to speaking out about the things that are important in
healthcare settings such as nurse/patient ratios

health care coverage, and it also allows for better access to primary care, wellness and prevention programs which will keep the patient healthier. This
reform serves as a significant victory for the patient that the nursing profession serves. The ANA continues to be an advocate for building an

18. Persuasive Essay On The Profession Of Nursing
The profession of Nursing takes a special kind of person. Nursing is a great profession, but it isn't for everybody. When you become a nurse, you
take on many different responsibilities and duties that must be completed, or there are consequences that follow. There are also different
requirements that have to be met with nursing, and I feel like I meet those requirements on becoming a registered nurse. Whether you are on the
clock or out in public, you always have to act like a professional. Nurses are professionals, and just because you are not on the clock, does not mean
you cannot get in trouble with work. The biggest thing that can get you in trouble is social media. Anything you post on social media can always
be brought back. Even though you deleted it, it can still be brought back. It is always going to be there. Another big thing that is a possible suspect
of getting you in trouble is alcohol abuse. People abuse alcohol and they see somebody out in public and that person lets your facility know and
then you will pay the consequence for that, so you always have to act like a professional, even though you are not on the clock. So, if you are
going to go out with your friends and your family, make sure you act professional about it. Don't drink to the point where you can barely function,
because it is going to hurt you in the long run. The guidelines and rules that you have to follow as a nurse is called a nurse's ethics. Ethics is what
you have to follow, and it also keeps you safe as a nurse. If you break the ethics of a nurse, you will have to follow the consequences that come with
them. You can get in trouble with the law, and also in trouble with your facility. You always have to follow the laws that the government has, but
when you become a nurse, the nurse's ethics become a new set of laws that you have to read and be aware of, because you have to follow them
like they are any other law. When you are licensed as a nurse, everybody looks up to you and they expect you to answer almost every question they
have. You are their go to for everything. Nurses are everywhere. We serve to do anything we can to help those that are in need. People always call
