Digital instantly became a universal need, and those without it were the hardest hit. Lockdowns exposed the cost of digital exclusion more clearly than ever before, but what have we learnt as a result?
This talk tells the story of what has happened to people and the frontline digital inclusion support across the UK during the first wave of COVID-19 and lockdown. We describe the emergency response taken by Good Things Foundation and our network of community and strategic partners. We reflect on the need for digital inclusion in a post Covid world, the new audiences for digital skills emerging, and how grassroots adaptation and innovation has ensured support for those who need it the most. Finally we identify priorities, and challenges, for collective action.
ABSTRACT: Open data has great potential, but it risks becoming a lost opportunity if the insiders' knowledge and tools to process it remain their prerogative. By analysing two case studies, the talk unveils the design approach of Sheldon.studio to turn open data into a digital commons, supporting a better-informed debate, a more vital civic consciousness, and fostering stronger participation in the democratic processes.
BIO: Matteo Moretti is an award-winning designer. He is co-founder of Sheldon.studio, the first studio on information-experience-design, and vice-director of the Iiteraction & Experience master at the University of the San Marino Republic. His projects, presented in many academic conferences and events, received the Data Journalism Award 2015, the European Design Award 2016, and 2017. Moretti has also been a jury member at the World Press Photo 2017-18 and one of the 100 ambassadors of Italian design in the world 2018.

Simon will consider how we can use a deeper understanding of value and impact to survive in an ever more competitive and confusing digital landscape. How do the cultural, heritage or creative sectors cope with the twin challenges of meeting the public desire for digital content whilst maintaining their curatorial responsibilities within what could be considered an unfunded mandate? Simon will investigate the values and benefits of digital with a consideration of the risks we face in what he refers to as the Digital Death Spiral. Simon will propose one solution in particular, The Balanced Value Impact Model (BVI Model) that he has recently developed. The BVI Model draws evidence from a wide range of sources to provide a compelling account of the means of measuring the impact of digital resources and using evidence to advocate how change benefits people. Simon will argue that putting people at the centre of our strategic thinking is both the most challenging and satisfying action we can take in securing our digital futures.
Ensuring the end product is inclusive can be a challenge, but so can also be the process that was used to design it. How do we make sure that design is just and that people and communities are not inadvertently harmed, on the basis of aspects such as age, background, gender, and race, in the design process by the choices we make as designers? How do we do this especially for new innovative technologies, which we might not know much about? In this session, the speaker will review the common pitfalls of typical design research and development. Then, the speaker will walk through a framework for better design work that is more inclusive and minimizes potential social harm.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
