^ New Bachelor of Applied Science In Network Security and Forenslcs at
Tennessee Institute of Electronics (TIE)

In September 2002, Tennessee Institute of Electronics
(TIE) in Knoxville, Tennessee, was approved to offer a
Bachelor of Applied Science program in Network
Security and Forenslcs. The design of the program is
based off the CBK of the (ISC)^ CISSP certification.
John Mailen, an instructor at TIE, is the architect of the
degree program and Sword and Shield Enterprise
Security, Inc. are the current members of the advisory
committee. Mr. Mailen also assisted in the design
process of the CompTIA Security+ industry certification
during 2002 as one of the SME.
Avgtiabli?
The program is a comprehensive, baccalaureate degree
completion program in computer network security and
forenslcs. It provides 66 semester credit hours of
instruction, which compliments any accredited
post-secondary computer-centric associate's degree.
Prospective students that have a non computer-centric
associate's degree or higher that wish to enroll in this
program must be able to demonstrate a proficiency in
computer and network technologies, such as 3
CompTIA, any 2 Microsoft, any 2 Novell, or any 1 Cisco
certification or at the discretion of the Institute. Day,
afternoon and evening classes meet 20 hours per week
for 4 semesters (60 weeks), assuming the entrance
criteria have been meet (completion of one of the
Institute's occupational associate's degrees, or a
minimum of 60 semester credit hours of
computer-centric technical training & appropriate
certifications).
Objective
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Network Security &
Forensics is awarded upon completion of 126 semester
credit hours in the following areas: 96 technical
management (60 from technical occupational associate
program, plus 36 security classes) in addition to 32
general education classes. The course of study is

intended for students who are interested in
complementing their previous associate level technical
training and experiences with additional security and
general education courses in order to gain both the
award of a Bachelor's degree and network security
oriented job placement. Graduates are expected to
obtain entry-level employment in a diverse range of
positions starting with their associate field of study up to
network security and forensics positions.
This program is designed to provide quality training in
the essentials of network security & forensics including:
the comprehension and appreciation of security issues
and forensic studies, the development of effective
communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills,
and an understanding of security and how it influences
business operations. The length of the program is 16 to
32 months depending on preexisting credits.
Graduates employed in the Network Security &
Forensics industry are generally given a title such as:
Security Analyst, Chief Technical Officer, Security
Managers, Network Security Managers, Security
Specialist, or Computer Support Scientist.
The Network Security and Forensics program will be
organizing a Visiting Lecturer program that would allow
Interested security industry experts to either potentially
deliver lectures on campus or via teleconference /
distance learning style. As the program develops there
will be additional opportunities for interaction with the
