The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) has decided to relocate its headquarters from Washington D.C. to the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. This move will provide opportunities for collaboration between the NPPA and the university. It will also benefit visual journalism students through potential work with the NPPA and enhance the reputation of UGA's photojournalism program. The NPPA president cited the enthusiasm of the Grady College and UGA as a whole as a key factor for choosing Athens over other locations. The new headquarters is expected to expand possibilities for both the NPPA and UGA students.
Do you need a designer who's used to juggling multiple #1 projects and somehow making it all happen? How about an expert who's comfortable acting as intermediary, explaining technical issues to management?
The Future of Higher Education Partnerships presented by Gary L. Miller, chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay
When Gary Miller considers the future of his own industry, higher education, it is impossible to conceptualize the university of tomorrow without a corresponding effort to anticipate the future needs of the city and region.
Since his arrival last summer, UW-Green Bay's chancellor has spent countless hours meeting with local employers, civic leaders, elected officials, alumni and current students to gather ideas on Green Bay's future. He views campus and community as full partners in shaping that future. While UW-Green Bay will continue to honor the great traditions of liberal-arts learning, it will survive and thrive only if it embraces the disruptive innovations that challenge those traditions at every turn.
In a rapidly evolving, Innovation Age economy, Miller sees three keys in powering the future: innovation, the transformative power of education, and regionally focused partnerships.

NPPA Moving to UGA Means Big
Opportunities for Both

The University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism
and Mass Communication has long had a reputation of
excellence, proven recently by stealing the No.2 spot in
the Radio Television Digital News Association ranking of
top journalism programs, and furthering this repute as the
National Press Photographers Association has decided
to relocate their headquarters to Grady.
“Doesn’t that sound good, the NPPA at UGA?" said Chip
Deale, the NPPA’s executive director. “Though if I could
change anything, I would take out the ampersand and
say ‘with.'"
The NPPA is “the leading voice advocating for the work
of visual journalists today,” according to its website and,
after almost two years of communication, proposals and
some competition, Grady welcomed the organization
Jan. 10 to its official new headquarters.
Mark Johnson, a photojournalism professor, was the
leader of the initiative to bring the NPPA to UGA,
knowing what the move could mean for both the
university and the organization.
The President of the NPPA, Mark Dolan, also said at the
forefront of their decision to move were the immense
opportunities that came along with being located in a
university setting.
“One of the reasons we wanted to come to the
university was the opportunity to collaborate,” Dolan
said.
He said being at UGA would allow the NPPA to “reach
out to many of the great minds,” make partnerships and
work with other organizations, non-profits, advocacy and
law groups.
Johnson initially proposed the move to the NPPA almost
two years ago, and although the proposition was well
received, the organization let other schools send in
proposals as well.
“So I was very excited one night back in August when
President Dolan called and said we got the
[nomination],” said Johnson at the welcoming reception
on Friday.
Dolan said another big factor in the decision to choose

UGA was the vast enthusiasm that everyone at UGA
showed.
“Frankly, it was as much the enthusiasm as anything
else…Mark Johnson was really effective in
communicating how excited everyone was, and he had
done so much homework. And it was not just Grady,
everyone was excited, and that was reflected," Dolan
said.
The move will open up opportunities not only for the
organization, but also for visual journalism students and
the relationships and experience they can gain through
work with the renown association.
“Honestly I think its great for after graduation, having the
fact that the NPPA is based here at UGA and wanting to
be a photojournalist – it really builds the reputation of UGA," said Hannah Burke, a magazine journalism from
Watkinsville.
Regardless of whether or not Grady students are interested in pursuing visual journalism, the new headquarters
provides an array of unique opportunities that will expand the horizons of both the NPPA and students alike.
As Deale said “It’s the dawn of a new era for the NPPA.”
