Alexander the Great- ancient Macedonian who conquered most of the
known world around 334 BCE
Daily Thought Directions: Write out and answer the daily thought

Daily goals
-Understand why leaders want to build empires.
-Recognize the significance of Alexander the Great.
-Empire: a large group of states or countries under a single ruler
-An empire is made when a leader takes an army into the place he wants to make part of his empire and takes
over that place and the people who live there
-Leaders make empires to have more power, to get more money, to get more resources, to control those
resources, and to spread his/her culture to other people

Darius I, he started the Persian Wars.
Greek phalanx, common battle formation used by the ancient Greeks.
The Persian Wars – These wars were fought between Greece and Persia
-Persia was an empire in Asia and they wanted to add Greece to their empire
1. Battle at Marathon: the Athenians and the Persians fought each other during this battle.
2. Battle at Thermopylae: ten years later the Persians invaded Greece again. The Spartan
king, Leonidas, and 300 men fought to hold off the Persians. All 300 men, including Leonidas
died, but Greece went on to win the Persian Wars.

The Persian fighters known as the "Immortals"
were the king's personal body guard. They were
the best fighters in the Persian Army.

The Peloponnesian War – This war was
fought between Sparta and Athens
-Delian League – Athens and her allies; this
was started to fight off the Persians
-Ally: a government unit that helps another
government during a war
-Sparta became jealous of the Delian
League and started a war against Athens this
war lasted 27 years, until finally Athens gave
up.
Alexander the Great
-Became the king of Macedonian when he was 20!
-He loved Greek culture and spread it throughout his empire
-He died when he was 32 years old without an heir; his generals then split the empire up
among themselves

Alexander the Great's tutor was the great
Greek philosopher Aristotle. He taught
Alexander the Great all about Greek culture
and that love of Greek culture was spread
throughout all the places he conquered.

Why was Alexander the Great Important?
-He NEVER lost a battle. EVER!
-He took over Greece, the Persian Empire, Egypt, India, and Mesopotamia. All of these places
were added to his empire
-Alexander the Great used his empire to spread Greek culture from Greece to India. Greek
Culture was important in all of these areas until the Romans took over Greece.
