Gyes is an aggregation platform for the Web. Gyes allows you to develop, schedule and troubleshoot data extraction programs (crawlers) that translate html content into structured data you can use later on. In selecting the data model for the platform, several challenges arose due to the lack of structure of the scraped data, and the need to provide meaningful and efficient access to it. MongoDB was our third rewrite of the Gyes back-end, and by far has exceeded expectations. In this talk, I would like to discuss some of the challenges we faced, and how MongoDB addressed them. Details about implementation challenges are also shared.

Bobby Johnson grew up on a plantation where his father treated slaves kindly instead of using fear and violence like other plantation owners. This led Johnson to question the morality of slavery. After studying the Bible away from pro-slavery preachers, he concluded slavery was wrong. Johnson then took over two plantations from his parents and succeeded in operating them without slaves through treating workers with respect, paying fair wages, profit sharing, and encouraging cooperation instead of competition based on fear. His slave-free plantations were more profitable than plantations that used slavery, demonstrating that a system based on fear is not the most effective way to motivate workers.

Linguist Jean-François Champollion was able to decipher the Egyptian hieroglyphs on the stone, having studied them for many years.
