This document summarizes a telematics pilot program between Norwich Union Insurance and IBM using a "pay as you drive" model. The program involves installing black box devices in 5,000 vehicles to track driving data like location and mileage. This data is sent via GPRS to a telematics gateway built on IBM hardware and middleware. The goal is to determine if usage-based insurance pricing can benefit drivers and the insurance industry. The black boxes run on an OSGi-based software architecture for modularity and remote management by the telematics gateway. If successful, the program could lead to additional telematics services in the future.
