Greetings:

This edition of The Northwood IDEA marks many time-honored traditions at Northwood University,
which include the ability to change when necessary to sustain our long-term growth.

The fall issue of the magazine is our Annual Report issue which recognizes and honors those who
supported the University over the past year. On that note, I am very happy to report this year’s donor
list includes 375 more individuals than last year’s.

And that’s not all. As you will see in other updates in this issue, a growing number of Northwood
University alumni are actively engaged in supporting their alma mater, including our $80 million dollar capital campaign which
entered the public phase in November. As this issue went to press, commitments to the campaign had reached 62.89%!

This is the largest-ever capital campaign in Northwood history, and one that is essential for our ability to continue educating the
future leaders of a global, free enterprise society. Monies raised will support not only current operations but the long-term capital and
endowment needs central to our mission. By providing the very best in facilities, resources, and faculty, our students, alumni, and the
world we serve will all be better off for it.

As you may also have noticed on the cover, we are instituting a few changes to The Northwood IDEA magazine. Starting with this issue,
IDEA magazine will be published three times annually to coincide with our year-round academic calendar—fall, spring, and summer
semesters. You will also notice some different features and news updates in this and future issues as we seek to keep the material fresh,
timely, and reflective of the ongoing feedback we get from you our readers.

Any individual who pledges and gives a cumulative annual gift of $1,000 or more each calendar year (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31) is enrolled
as a member of the 1959 Society. Individuals who join the society are encouraged to make an annual and perpetual commitment

Incubator you wonder? Well, it has nothing to do with baby birds. Instead, The NU (North-

Enterprise, provides entrepreneurially minded students both physical and virtual space for

Northwood University continues its annual tradition of recognizing women for their enormous contribution
to their respective communities. Herb Weitzman and his wife, Donna, who was awarded this honor in 2003,
hosted a media event in September to announce the Class of 2012 Distinguished Women. This program
was created 43 years ago by the Northwood University Board of Trustees. As with previous years, the Class
of 2012 represents the values which Northwood espouses for its students: commitment to free enterprise,
the partnership of arts and business, and the management of global commerce.

Northwood University (FL) junior forward Helen Lynskey (Rotherham, UK)

Sun Conference Women’s and Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Lynskey’s efforts powered the No. 19 Lady Seahawks to a pair of Sun Conference
wins, over Southeastern and Ave Maria. In the 2-0 shutout of Southeastern,
she scored both goals for Northwood. Two days later, Northwood took down
Ave Maria, 5-0, behind a two-goal performance by Lynskey. She put the Lady
Seahawks up early with a goal in the opening five minutes, then followed
Helen Lynskey Marcus Johansson that with her second tally in the 17th minute.

In a 3-1 win over Southeastern, Johansson contributed on all three goals for the Seahawks. Trailing 1-0 at the half, Johansson fueled a
three-goal spurt in a ten-minute span including netting the eventual game-winning goal on a penalty kick just three minutes later. This

KEISHLA RIVERA SIGNS WITH PRO TEAM IN PUERTO RICO
Former Northwood women’s basketball player Keishla Rivera signed to play professional basketball with
San German in Puerto Rico. The Orlando native stands at five-feet and played point guard for Northwood.

During her two-year career with the Seahawks, Rivera averaged 35.6 minutes with 12.2 points. In the
2010-11 season, Rivera was 35% from the field, 37% from three-point range and 76% from the foul
line, averaging 13.1 points/game with four rebounds, five assists and three steals. In the 2011-12 sea-
son, she averaged 37 minutes a game, shooting 35% from the field, 38% from three-point and 76%
from the free throw line, averaging 13 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals a game.

“Keishla has something you don’t expect someone of her stature to have, it’s this unrelenting will,
toughness and desire,” said Northwood Head Coach Mark Sanford. “It’s more than just a physical thing,
her mind is so strong, and her mental toughness allowed her to play through injuries. She has a high

The No. 21 Northwood University (FL) women’s soccer clinched their seventh consecutive Sun Conference championship with a 2-1
overtime win over #8 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at Arrigio-Vecellio field.

The Lady Seahawks finished the regular season with a 13-4-1 record and are waiting to see who their first round opponent will be the
NAIA national tournament, with the possibility of hosting a first round game at Arrigo-Vecellio Field.

In turn, the fifth-seeded men’s soccer team came back twice, then used a mistake by the fourth-seed Thomas University in the first
overtime to defeat the Nighthawks 3-2 in their Sun Conference Quarterfinal matchup.

The Northwood men’s team improved to 13-5 on the season and advanced to the semi-finals of the Sun Conference tournament.

Many of Northwood’s Texas campus golfers do not have much of a Texas
accent. In fact, visit with these talented student-athletes for just a few
minutes and you’ll be forgiven if you think you’re at a United Nations
meeting rather than on a golf course.

This year Coach Belfield fielded a women’s team with golfers from
Mexico, Canada, and Singapore to go along with student-athletes from
California and Georgia.

On the men’s side, the team features three Canadians, an Australian,

and one golfer from Great Britain to go along with three Californian
golfers, plus one each from Iowa and Michigan.

“And of course,” Coach Belfield said, “we have five Texans playing on the men’s team.”

“Youngsters from other countries are attracted to American universities because of our collegiate athletics system,” Belfield continued,
“There is nothing else like it in the world.”

Both the men and women golf teams have started their 2012 season out strong. Freshman Fariza Zain fired a solid 74 to finish 3rd
overall at the women’s first tournament at the Hawk Creek Classic and the men’s team took first place at the UMHB Invitational earlier

Debut Season to be Challenging for Knights
There are no pushovers on the Knight men’s and women’s basketball schedules in this
inaugural year. The men’s team, for instance, will play home games against teams such as
NCAA Division II Henderson State, NAIA perennial power Oklahoma City University, and
the always tough Rogers State. The men have also scheduled road games against NCAA
schools such as Lamar, Lubbock Christian and Angelo State Universities. When the men
wind up their first year on February 28, they will have played a total of 32 games, includ-
ing two scrimmages and two exhibitions. “This is an ambitious schedule for a first-year
program,” Head Coach Ray Wilkerson said. “But we want to be the best, and to do that you
have to play the best. Our kids are excited, and we think we may surprise some people

A Junior Varsity men’s team will play 22 games, mostly against schools located in and
around the Dallas/Ft. Worth Area.

If anything, the women might have an even tougher schedule, according to Head Coach
Michael Wells. “We’ll take on schools like Stephen F. Austin and Northern New Mexico,” Wells
said. “And we’re also playing several schools that we will be seeing a lot of when we join
the Sooner Athletic Conference next year.” Wells pointed that SAC schools on the schedule
include University of Science & Arts, St. Gregory’s, and Oklahoma Baptist.

Both the women and men will face their crosstown rival, Ft. Worth’s Texas Wesleyan Univer-
sity, both home and away. “This is going to be fun,” Athletic Director Jack Allday concluded.

entertained by the comedic magic of Bo Gerard and also had the
opportunity to take a walk down memory lane with a yearbook
and photo album display.

After the announcement of the 2012 Homecoming Court, different classes gathered together to cross over and be inducted into
Knighthood. Families and friends watched and supported as newly knighted participants received their medallion and joined their
fellow knights.

Alumni Activity in Texas is at all Time High -The DFW NU Alumni Group is in Full Swing
Despite the end of the summer season alumni activity in Texas continues to pick up speed. Earlier this year, the Northwood Texas
Alumni Leadership Council supported two events which reunited alumni with their alma mater.

On August 21, over fifty alumni and guests gathered together for “Knights at Rangers Ballpark.” For a discounted price, participants
enjoyed an ‘All You Can Eat’ buffet, an air-conditioned grill, and Texas Rangers baseball. Despite a Rangers loss, the event was a home-
run for Northwood: Graduates from the traditional, ADP, and DeVos programs were in attendance, the Alpha Omega fraternity brought
former classmates and members together, and new connections among NU alumni were made.

“The Texas Alumni Leadership Council is looking to do more events like this,” remarked Caleb Miller, a Michigan graduate and President
of the Council. “These opportunities provide excellent networking and relationship building experiences, all while providing an
engaging atmosphere.”

On September 6th, the newly established DeVos MBA Alumni Society (DAS) held its first event with nearly twenty graduates gathering
at a local favorite, David’s Seafood. Participants reflected on their cohort experience and shared stories of how their MBA has helped
them progress in their career. The Society was thrilled to have different cohorts represented, including one attendee who had just
completed her third class in the program.

“‘DeVos Night Out’ served as a bridge between alumni and graduate and undergraduate students,” said Pamela Anderson, President
of the DAS. “Representatives from new DeVos cohort and administration exemplified the uniqueness of the Northwood Experience.
This is just the beginning of a lifetime commitment to our University’s future,” she continued.

The Northwood community lost one of its most fabulous members, Erica Paul (Gough) in
the spring of 2011. In 2012 Erica’s family and friends created the “Erica Paul Gough Endowed
Scholarship” to provide scholarships to Northwood students whose lives have been affected

spirit alive and support students who are dealing with similar issues within their families.

Born and raised in Coleman, Michigan, Erica was a fun-loving, fabulous gal who was diag-
nosed with stage four metastatic colon cancer at age 26. Instead of letting the devastating
news stop her in her tracks, Erica began her fabulous journey of HOPE and activism. Through
the many procedures, treatments, and surgeries, she always managed to flash that brilliant,
fabulous smile. She began sharing her story in the hopes that others would not be stricken
with such a terrible disease. Her infectious laugh made everyone and anyone fall in love with
her instantly. And as if that wasn’t enough, she was always quick with a kind word, cheer of
support, or an out of tune song that managed to help so many people feel better about their
lives…even as she was battling for her own.


Alumni Soccer Game Reunites Seahawks of all Ages
Seahawk alumni of all ages visited Northwood University Florida to participate in the 3rd Annual Alumni Soccer game on
August 30. The annual event was held at the Arrigo-Vecellio Soccer Field. The reunion welcomed alumni from across the
country, and began with a continental breakfast prior to the spirited competitions.

“Every year this event gets bigger and better,” said Coach Ty Brewer, “I always look forward to reminiscing with the incredible
athletes I’ve had the opportunity to coach over the past decade,” he said. Although the alumni teams were not victorious
this year, everyone had a great time reconnecting and seeing Coach Brewer. “I was amazed at how well the current North-
wood Florida ladies played as they beat us 8-3,” said Diana Hue. I’m really looking forward to the official start of the season,
so I can come back to campus to cheer them on,” she said.

include retirement plan assets, securities (common and preferred stock, mutual funds), cash

For donors who wish to defer their charitable gifts until the time of death, the best assets to use are IRAs, accumulated
retirement plan balances, or other assets upon which income tax has been deferred. By using such assets for charitable
gifts, all the accrued income tax liability is avoided entirely. The easiest way to gift IRAs or qualified plan balances to charity
at the time of death is simply to name the charity on a beneficiary designation form provided by the IRA custodian or plan
administrator.

Upon death, retirement plan assets may not only be subject to an estate tax, but also an income tax when transferred to
non-spousal beneficiaries. In some cases they can be taxed at a combined marginal rate as high as 65 percent. By using
retirement plan, assets to leave a planned gift, you can avoid estate and income taxes and ensure that 100 percent of the
balance of your retirement funds will support the philanthropic objectives you care most deeply about.
