2. North Malabar Gramin Bank (NMGB; Malayalam: was a Regional Rural Bank in
Kerala, India. It was established in 1976 as a Scheduled Commercial Bank as per
Regional Rural Banks Act of 1976 to provide banking facilities in the North Malabar
region.
It operated in seven districts of Kerala with the headquarters at Kannur, and had
222 branches as of 14 June 2013. The bank distinguished itself as one of the few
profit making RRBs in India before its amalgamation.
On 8 July 2013, as per a notification by Government of India, North Malabar
Gramin Bank (sponsored by Syndicate Bank) and South Malabar Gramin Bank
(sponsored by Canara Bank) were amalgamated into a single entity as the Kerala
Gramin Bank, with its head office at Malappuram, and Canara Bank as the sponsor
bank, after consulting NABARD, the concerned sponsor banks and the Government
of Kerala.

4. Kerala Gramin Bank
Kerala Gramin Bank (KGB) is a Regional Rural Bank (RRB) formed on 08.07.2013,
under the Sub-Section (1) of Section 3 of the RRB Act 1976 (27 of 1976).
The bank was formed by amalgamating the two RRBs of Kerala namely South
Malabar Gramin Bank and North Malabar Gramin Bank through a notification by
the government of India.
The head office of Kerala Gramin Bank is at Malappuram and the sponsor bank is
Canara Bank. Kerala Gramin Bank is the largest Regional Rural Bank in the country
with a total business of above Rs. 26,800 Crore and a network of 600 branches
spread all over Kerala. The Bank has a well dedicated team of 3500 plus staff
members. It is having dominant presence in all the 14 districts of Kerala State and
is the only RRB in the State.
5. The share capital of the bank is Rs. 2 Crore contributed by the Central Government,
State Government and Sponsor Bank in the ratio 50:15:35 respectively. As on 08.07.2013
Bank’s total Deposits stood at Rs. 7306 Crores and total advance at 7707 Crore.
The main focus of the bank is to initiate appropriate intervention for overall economic
upliftment of the people of Kerala by giving financial assistance to the sectors like
Agriculture, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, education, housing, micro-credit,
weaker sections, SC/ST communities etc.
KGB has carved a niche for itself through its 39 year old history of dedicated and
customized service to the clientele by its predecessor RRBs. With 600 branches as on
30.10.2016, it is the third largest bank in Kerala in terms of branch network. Further, its
CD ratio is the highest among major banks of Kerala. KGB leads other Banks in the state
in the number of persons assisted under Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and SME (Priority)
schemes.
7. NABARD is set up as an Apex Development Bank with a mandate for facilitating credit
flow for promotion and development of agriculture, small-scale industries, cottage and
village industries, handicrafts and other rural crafts. It also has the mandate to support
all other allied economic activities in rural areas, promote integrated and sustainable
rural development and secure prosperity of rural areas
In discharging its role as a facilitator for rural prosperity NABARD is entrusted with

10. Branches and Overview
NABARD is set up by the Government of India as a development bank with the
mandate of facilitating credit flow for promotion and development of agriculture
and integrated rural development.
The mandate also covers supporting all other allied economic activities in rural
areas, promoting sustainable rural development and ushering in prosperity in the
rural areas.
With a capital base of Rs 2,000 crore provided by the Government of India and
Reserve Bank of India , it operates through its head office at Mumbai, 31 regional
offices situated in state capitals and 535 district offices at districts.
It is an apex institution handling matters concerning policy, planning and
operations in the field of credit for agriculture and for other economic and
developmental activities in rural areas. Essentially, it is a refinancing agency for
financial institutions offering production credit and investment credit for
promoting agriculture and developmental activities in rural areas.
11. NABARD today
Initiates measures toward institution-building for improving absorptive capacity of
the credit delivery system, including monitoring, formulation of rehabilitation
schemes, restructuring of credit institutions, training of personnel, etc.
Coordinates the rural financing activities of all the institutions engaged in
developmental work at the field level and maintains liaison with the government
of India , State governments, the Reserve Bank of India and other national level
institutions concerned with policy formulation.
Prepares, on annual basis, rural credit plans for all the districts in the country.
These plans form the base for annual credit plans of all rural financial institutions
Undertakes monitoring and evaluation of projects refinanced by it promotes
research in the fields of rural banking, agriculture and rural development
Functions as a regulatory authority, supervising, monitoring and guiding
cooperative banks and regional rural banks.
