MADD Mothers Against Drunk Driving By Alicia Munoz October 4, 2010
Our Mission “ The Mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.”
How we started MADD started on September 5, 1980. The original name and mission was “Mothers Against Drunk Drivers: To aid the victims of crimes performed by individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to aid the families of such victims and to increase public awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving Since then we have changed our name to better support our cause and to show that we aren’t against the individuals but the criminal act of driving while under the influence.
Who we are MADD is made up of a national board of directors to ensure safe roads across America MADD is lead by CEO Kimberly Earle and President Laura Dean-Mooney Based in Irving, Texas with copious amounts offices across the United States and Canada
Our Services We are working towards turning Cars into the Cure. We believe Parents are important in ensuring teens understand the dangers of drinking and driving We also offer support tools for parents and making sure that there are stricter laws to ensure teens cannot purchase alcohol before the age of 21. In colleges, we work towards warning students of the affects of alcohol misuse and binge drinking. And throughout the year we have an event to warn against drunk driving.
Victim Services We believe it is integral to provide support by offering opportunities for survivors to talk to other survivors or the family of those affected. We also have victim and survivor tributes displayed on our website and events to honor those affected.
Why MADD? On May 25,2006, my cousin Steve Ambriz was hit and killed by a driver that was under the influence. Since then a new law has been set into place, AB 808 Ambriz Act, which requires California drivers to sign a statement that acknowledges what will happen if they do drive and kill while under the influence. MADD is working towards what I know my cousin would want to help protect the streets we drive on.
Community Need MADD works with communities across the United States to prevent driving while under the influence. MADD works in college areas to promote safe driving and that if you are going to drink, to have a designated driver. Throughout the year, Walk Like MADD occurs to spread awareness of the affects and honor those affected.
Celebrating 30 years! We recently celebrated 30 years of saving lives and serving people in Washington DC. A rally was held along with key speakers to help celebrate the anniversary.
MADD and Critical Thinking MADD daily evaluates what is happening in America and works to improve the laws at hand to be proactive about what affect driving will have on our futures. MADD also organizes events and to help individuals, students and parents work together to reconsider what and whom their actions affect. Which has been proven to save lives.
MADD and Critical Reading MADD analyzes each of the different states driving laws to better improve them. We also explore the ideas of new laws, such as the Ambriz Act, which has more penalties for those that erroneously break the law and kill. MADD clarifies these laws so that the public can better comprehend them and put them into daily practice which is makes all the difference.
MADD and Critical Action MADD is critical action. They are working tirelessly to improve the way people think about driving and their actions. MADD develops new ways to help inspire students to take proper steps when it comes to alcohol consumption. MADD also works with survivors utilizing their help MADD is able to reach out to more of the community.
Just Think Foundation and MADD The Just Think Foundation works towards youth making healthy life decisions. Not only does the Just Think Foundation work with students but also with parents, teachers and others which is what MADD has done to better today’s youth and nation.
Let’s get involved! You too can make a difference. You can donate to MADD to help save lives. You can “Walk Like MADD” to help raise awareness. And you can Volunteer to provide help to those that have been affected by drunk driving.
Thank you!!
