No Fear
What is Fear?
Life with no fear
“SM asked 15 different times if
she could touch one of the larger
[poisonous] snakes.”
“She also attempted to touch a
tarantula, but had to be stopped due
to the high risk of being bitten.”
“As the other members of the group
lagged behind her, she
would repeatedly call out, ‘This way
guys, follow me!’”
– Franklin D. Roosevelt

fear itself”

No Fear

Editor's Notes

  1. Fear is an innate human emotion induced in response to a danger or threat whether real or otherwise. Fear stops you from walking in front of a bus. Or picking up spiders.
  2. Different fears manifest in different people
  3. Although some things are inherently frightening
  4. There is one know human who lacks the ability to fear known as SM. In the study, The human amygdala and the induction and experience of fear, researchers placed the SM in a series of fear-inducing situations to see what would happen. Feinstein, Justin S.; Adolphs, Ralph; Damasio, Antonio; Tranel, Daniel
  5. Taken to a pet store, she was exposed to a snakes…
  6. …and spiders. She was driven by an overwhelming sense of curiosity.
  7. During Halloween, they took SM to the Waverly Hills Sanatorium, ranked as one of the ‘most haunted’ places in the world. She laughed when monsters leapt out at her.
  8. Lies. There are plenty of things to fear.
  9. I haven’t done this before. I don’t like it.
  10. Question - Research Discomfort at comfort Punk Oppose order
  11. Stick to perceived tried and tested to avoid failure?
  12. Fear of failure is captured by the precautionary principle: try without error; succeed without failure. Fail early, fail often. Make mistakes so you can learn.
  13. I lack the skill/experience/knowledge to suggest a change. Sooner or later, I’ll be found out because I don’t know what I’m doing. This is more commonly known as imposter syndrome.
  14. This fear is perhaps one of the hardest to conquer. Comfort can be found in the fact that many are plagued with it.
  15. Kiasu! Everyone else* is doing it so it must be good. * Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple.
  16. Can lead to cargo cult behaviour. We are pack creatures and yet standing out from the crowd is what leads to success.
  17. Are we following a well-worn path or are we about to run off a cliff?
  18. Becoming locked into “safe” cycles, leaves us at risk of being left behind as the world changes around us.
  19. How do we tame our fears? Science!
  20. Don’t become a piece of furniture. Ask questions, prompt discussion, look for a different way.
  21. Be careful not to overdo it
  22. But press ahead. This screen shot is from Digital Ocean who are well aware of humanity’s innate change-resistance.
  23. Formulating a hypothesis requires observing the subject directly while looking for previously documented examples.
  24. Research can be very difficult at times
  25. Although sometimes solutions will leap out at you.
  26. “Highest Paid Person’s Opinion” leaves good ideas on the floor. Research is your antidote.
  27. Opinions are empty if they’re not grounded.
  28. Opinions are fine but researched opinions carry weight. Change the conversation from from you think you know to what you actually know. “My research shows” vs “I think”. Quote your references even if you’re sure you know.
  29. Fail early, fail often. When you try a variety of methods, you’ll learn about what works and what doesn’t even when the solution seems obvious.
  30. This is Brad Bird.
  31. He’s made a movie
  32. or
  33. two
  34. or
  35. more. ‘You don’t know whether it’s going to work or not, you think it will. You con everybody into thinking, “It’s gonna work, absolutely!” when the truth is you have a lot of confidence with it but you don’t know for sure, particularly if you’re doing something new. Making films is an act of just saying, “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” and you fill it in with something and it ends up consuming years of people’s lives but at the end of it, there it is.’
  36. As soon as you have something that seems reasonable, test it out. Does it work the way you expected it to? If not, make some changes and try again.
  37. It’s not hard to find examples of things that should have been caught in testing.
  38. Design is never done. Software is never finished. Keep questioning and looking for potential improvements.
  39. Watch your results and see if your original hypothesis is correct. If not, rinse and repeat.
  40. You’ll often fight pressure to continue on to the next project or development phase without conducting a review. This is especially true when you’re under time pressure.
  41. If you don’t review, you’ll have never really tested your hypothesis. Will electronic books take over the world or just occupy a niche?
  42. Design is never done. Software is never finished. Keep questioning and looking for potential improvements.
  43. Steve Sasson invented the digital camera in 1975 while working at Kodak. With Robert Hills, he invented the first DSLR in 1989 but Kodak decided not to bring the invention to market for fear of encroaching on their film sales. Kodak filed for bankruptcy in 2012.
  44. We’ve lost too many music legends this year for me not to quote from one of them. Don’t get too comfortable no matter what life throws at you. Tackle your challenges head on and you won’t be left on the sidelines.
