The National Islamic Association in Newark, New Jersey is constructing a new 18,000 square foot masjid to meet the needs of its growing Muslim community of over 1,100 individuals. The new facility will provide increased classroom space for religious education programs, youth activities, and community outreach initiatives. It is being designed and built to be more environmentally friendly than the existing 1,700 square foot buildings through the use of sustainable materials and systems. Construction is taking place in phases from 2010 to 2011 with a total budget of $1.7 million funded through donations.
