SaveLIFE Foundation is a nonprofit focused on improving road safety and emergency medical care in India. It was founded in 2008 after the founder's cousin died in a road accident. SaveLIFE works at both the policy level and grassroots level, training over 6000 police in emergency response. It advocates for stronger road safety laws and aims to enable emergency response within the critical first hour of an accident. Road accidents are a major cause of death in India, killing over 10 lakh people in the past decade. SaveLIFE's vision is to improve access to trauma life support and emergency transportation for accident victims.

2. INTRODUCTION
• SaveLIFE Foundation (SLF) is an independent non-profit, non-governmental
organization focused on improving road safety and emergency medical care across
India through high-impact and strategic interventions at the policy as well as
grassroots level.
• In the recent past, SLF has secured protection for Good Samaritans, who help
injured persons, from ensuing legal and procedural hassles; convinced Government
of India to draft a comprehensive road safety law for India; ensured ban on trucks
from carrying protruding rods; trained over 6000 Police personnel to rescue and
revive injured persons on the road; and got two Private Member Bills introduced in
the Parliament.
• SLF’s path breaking work has been recognised both nationally as well as
internationally. Most recently, SLF has been recognised as the best NGO in India by
Rockefeller Foundation; won the prestigious Prince Michael International Road

3. HISTORY
• SLF was founded on February 29, 2008 by Piyush Tewari
following the death of his 17-year-old cousin, Shivam Bajpai, in a
road accident in 2007.
• He discovered that according to the Law Commission of India,
50% of all the road accident deaths in India can be prevented if
the victims were to get care on time.
• He invited his friend and mentor Krishen Mehta to join him in
setting up the organization with a mission to enable Bystander
Care — the immediate care that Police and public can provide
emergency victims, especially those of road accidents, to
enhance their chances of survival — in India.

4. • SLF started with training police personnel — the first responders
at most accidents — in basic trauma and life support skills.
• During the research, SLF identified various gaps in the existing legal
framework around road safety and emergency care in India, hence
started developing legal recommendations also.
• Today, SaveLIFE Foundation focuses on advocating for stronger
policies, intervening through the courts to address gaps in existing
laws and building proofs of concept through on-ground interventions.

5. BACKGROUND
• In the past decade, over 10 lakh people have been killed in road accidents
and over 50 lakh have been seriously injured or permanently disabled.
• Road accidents are also the single biggest killer of young people, aged 15–
45, in India.
• An alarming number of families have fallen into poverty after losing their
primary breadwinners to such accidents, also causing a 3% GDP loss in
India each year.
• In August 2013, the Honorable Supreme Court of India has called the
problem of road accident deaths a “National Emergency”.

6. VISION
• Initiation of Treatment during the First Critical “GOLDEN HOUR”. Training of
Paramedics and
Citizens in “TRAUMA LIFE SUPPORT”. Establishment of PreHospital Care,
Transportation of
the Victims by the Trained Paramedics to the Right Place of Medical Expertise, in the
shortest
possible Time. Awareness, Education and Participation of the Community in this
Project. A Single
Unified Emergency Number & a Central Ambulance Dispatch Control system.

7. MISSION
• Given the dearth of trained police/community first responders in India
who can effectively provide life-saving care to road accident victims,
SLF has taken the initiative to create “SaveLIFE HealthCORPS”, a
unique voluntary group through which young and passionate
individuals from medical field (such as trauma specialists/BLS
trainers/doctors and alike) can commit a few hours every month to
train police personnel and community persons in basic
techniques/skills of emergency care/basic life support/trauma care.

Founders
KRISHEN MEHTA
Krishen Mehta is a writer, teacher, and speaker on issues of global tax justice. Prior to making tax justice his main focus, he
was a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and served in their New York, London, and Tokyo offices. His
responsibilities included PwC’s US Tax practices in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, China, and Indonesia,
encompassing over 140 American companies conducting business in Asia. Krishen is a Senior Advisor to Tax Justice
Network. He serves on the Advisory Board of Aspen Institute’s Business and Society Program, and is a member of the Asia
Advisory Council of Human Rights Watch. He is also a Trustee of the Korbel School of International Studies at the
University of Denver, and of the Institute of Current World Affairs in Washington, DC. He is also an Adjunct Professor at
American University, and a frequent guest speaker at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in
Boston and at Tokyo University in Japan. He has also conducted Capstone workshops for graduate students at the School
of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University. From 2010-2012, Krishen was Co-Chairman of the
Advisory Board of GFI, a research and advocacy group at the Center for International Policy in Washington, DC, engaged in
the area of financial transparency.
PIYUSH TEWARI
Piyush Tewari is a social entrepreneur focused on improving road safety and emergency medical care across India. He is
the Founder & President of SaveLIFE Foundation, an initiative for which he has been awarded the Ashoka Fellowship, the
Echoing Green Fellowship and the prestigious Rolex Award for Enterprise. He is advocating for a strong national road safety
law for India and currently expanding SaveLIFE’s award-winning model of emergency care, which trains, connects and
mobilises community volunteers and police officers to the aid of injured victims well before formal care is available. Piyush is
a graduate of Delhi University.
