Before we begin…
(This guide makes the assumption that the tablets have been signed out and
recorded as such by the client quartermaster)
Prior to attempting to set up a Nexus 7 Tablet, ensure that you are in
possession of these items:
Tablet case
Adaptor
Charging cable
Reference Card
Each of these items has a reference number that corresponds to the
reference number on the back of the tablet. If the reference number on any
of these items does not match the reference number on the back of the
tablet, please contact the client quartermaster.

Definitions
Notification Bar: The notification bar displays information that becomes
available without user input (see diagram). For example, the notification bar
displays
- New email messages
- App updates
- File syncing
- Photo storage
To access these notifications, pull down on the left-hand side of the tablet
screen. Pressing on any notification will take the user to the appropriate
page to view more information about the notification.
Home Screen: A home screen is where the tablet takes users when the unit
is unlocked, when an application is closed, and when the home screen
button is pressed. Apps and widgets can be placed on home screens for easy
access (see diagram).
Widget: A widget displays interactive information from an app on the home
screen. This allows users to utilize apps without launching them (see
diagram).
Home Screen Indicator: Nexus 7 tablets have five home screens. The home
screen indicator displays which of the five home screen is currently being
viewed (see diagram).
App: An app is an icon that launches an application when pressed (see
diagram).
App Tray: The App Tray is a location to place apps that is visible on every
home screen (see diagram).
Hide Keyboard button: When a box that accepts text is selected, the
keyboard automatically appears. It takes up one third of the screen space.
The Hide Keyboard button hides the keyboard to provide space on the
screen for other activities. It is located on the bottom left-hand side of the
tablet screen. When a text box is not selected, the Back button takes the
place of the Hide Keyboard button.
Back Button: The Back button serves two functions. First, it allows users to
return to a previous page in apps and web browsers. Second, it closes apps
when pressed on the main menu of apps. It is located on the bottom left-
hand side of the tablet. When the keyboard is displayed, the Back button is
replaced with the Hide Keyboard button. To access the Back button, press
the Hide Keyboard button (see diagram).
Home Button: The Home button takes users to the main home screen of the
tablet. It is always located on the bottom center of the tablet screen (see
diagram).
Recent Apps Button: The Recent Apps allows users to return to recently
used apps. It is always located on the bottom right-hand side of the tablet
screen (see diagram).
All Apps Button: The All Apps button displays a grid of every app installed
on the tablet. It is located on the App Tray and cannot be removed or
moved(see diagram).
Settings or Options Button: Include example images.
Volume Up/Down: A long button located on the upper right side of the
tablet (below the power) that adjusts the volume of the tablet. The
On/Off Button: A button located on the upper right side of the tablet
(above the volume) that locks/unlocks the tablet when pressed and powers
on/off the tablet when held.
Swipe: Placing your finger on the tablet screen and moving it in any
direction. When the term “swipe” is used, it is paired with a direction.
Press: Briefly pressing your finger on the tablet screen where the desired
object is located.
Press and hold: Placing a finger on the tablet screen where the desired
object is located and holding it there for a full second. Be careful not to
move your finger in any direction when attempting to “press and hold”, as
this can cause the tablet to interpret a “swipe” (see Swipe definition).

1. Ensure that the tablet is charged prior to initial set up.
2. Hold the power on/off button to turn the tablet on.
3. Select Language by pressing the “play” button.

This is a widget. Widgets display interactive information from apps on a
homescreen. To remove a widget, press and hold on the widget until the
“Remove” option slides down from the top of the screen. Drag the widget
and drop it onto the “Remove” option.
This is an app. Apps are represented by small icons. To remove an app, press
and hold on an app until the “Remove” option slides down from the top of
the screen. Drag the app and drop it onto the “Remove” option. Note: This
does not uninstall the app from the device. It can still be accessed via the All
Apps button.
