EMAP plc was the subject of a City rumour last week that a takeover bid by
venture capitalists or French media group Lagardere was imminent. EMAP
shares closed up at 878p by the end of last week’s trading, 17% up from their
52-week low of 748.5p in May, though still substantially below the 1200p price
reached in 2000 at the height of the radio boom.
Paris-based Lagardere, like EMAP, is a multimedia empire that includes
publishing, television and radio. The company’s Lagardere Active Radio
International subsidiary is Europe’s largest cross-border radio group and its
eighteen stations have a daily reach of 27 million listeners. They include
'Europe 1', 'Europe 2' and 'RFM' in France, 'Antenne AC', 'Main FM', 'Radio
Salu', 'Kiss FM' and 'Delta Radio' in Germany, 'Europa Plus' and 'Retro FM' in
Russia, 'Europa FM' in Romania, 'Radio Zet' and 'Radiostacja' in Poland,
'Europa 2', 'Frekvence 1' and 'Info Radio' in the Czech Pepublic, 'Jacaranda
FM' in South Africa and 'Hitradio' in Belgium. The company was founded in
1826 by Louis Hachette, who had opened a single bookstore in Paris, and it
now employs 43,000 staff in 40 countries.
