2. Citizen journalism- We
Media
With the Rise of Digital Technology, there has
been an explosion in citizen journalism. Here are
a few examples of these sites, where everyday
citizens can view, write, comment on and share
articles
3. Sharing my Opinion on the
Iphone X hashtag on twitter
is a form of citizen journalism
These Tweets all appear
In one feed, alongside
each other
I used this as a
contribution to citizen
journalism by sharing
my opinion on a topic
I chose twitter as my
means of distribution
as it has many users,
and a way to easily
get involved in
discussion using the
hashtag system
6. Other Forms of Distribution
These Official
media
companies
often distribute
the news
through
different
mediums such
as TV, Print,
Online etc.
7. We Media Vs Official News
Comparing articles from a We Media site to articles from
official sources
8. We Media
These articles are both from the We
Media site “global voices.” However, as
this is citizen journalism, both are
written independently by different
authors. As such they are quite different
from each other. Despite both being
about hurricane Irma, one is very
focused on the devastating side of the
hurricane, while the other is a more
personal piece about the writer’s
experiences.
They also both present the stories differently
from one another. For example, the story on
the left has a much calmer tone using words
such as “meditation.” to suit this mood, the
image used is an artistic painting depicting
the hurricane. As opposed to this, the article
on the right is about the panic and damage,
as is evident by the word “crisis” and “hits.”
This is reflected in the image used which in
this instance is a violent, blurry photograph of
the damage that the hurricane is causing.

9. Official News
Sources
The Guardian
The Telegraph
These articles are from different official sources, reporting on hurricane
Irma. Despite them being from different sources, they are both quite
similar. For example, both articles focus on facts and accounts from
people, making the newspapers more factual and likely accurate than
the We-Media articles, which contain more opinions.
This is likely because when an official news source is reporting the
news, they are expected by their readers to deliver news that is factual
and well researched. Especially Broadsheet papers like these two. Due
to the less personal, and more factual approach, these official sources
could be considered to be less biased.
The articles are also similar in the way
that they are presented. Both use similar
language to accurately describe the
situation. Furthermore, both use a
combination of relevant photographs and
videos. Neither use false images or
videos, unlike the first We-Media article,
which used a painting.

10. News Distribution Through websites
Advantages Disadvantages
• Easy Worldwide Distribution
• Cheaper than traditional
Distribution (no printing, shipping
etc.)
• Audience interaction (Social Media
Sharing, Comments, etc.)
• Easier use of multimedia such as
Videos and Audio
• Able to reach a wider audience that
consume most media through the
internet (teenagers)
• Able to Edit and change mistakes
• Unable to sell as a product
(sponsorships and Advertisements
required to make money)
• The internet is a very over saturated
market making it more difficult for your
news site to stand out and gain
attention
• Costs money to keep websites
running
• Susceptible to hacking with
malicious intent (pranks, DDoS attacks
etc.)
