3Introduction
The original design of the dual time zone display and
the discreet annual calendar endows the Sky-Dweller
with an exclusive aesthetic identity, singling it out as the
global traveller’s watch. The rotatable fluted bezel and the
42 mm case crafted from a solid block of 18 ct gold are
distinguished hallmarks of Rolex elegance.

Thanks to sophisticated engineering, the Sky-Dweller is
intuitive to read and simple to use. Local time is displayed
by the traditional centre hands and the off-centre rotating
disc with 24 hour markers shows the chosen reference
time on the dial. The Cyclops lens magnifies the date for
easy reading while the current month is displayed in one of
12 discreet apertures around the circumference of the dial.
This annual calendar requires only one date adjustment
a year, in February. The innovative fluted Ring Command
bezel completes the interface, allowing the global traveller
to easily select each individual function he needs to set.

Function of the Sky-Dweller
The rotatable Ring Command bezel interacts with the movement to allow the
global traveller to easily access the watch functions that need to be set. The
bezel can be turned to any one of three positions to select the date, local time
or reference time. The selected function can then be rapidly adjusted in either
direction using the winding crown. This intuitive interface is based on a complex
mechanical module which consists of no fewer than 60 components, the product
of state-of-the-art watchmaking and micromechanical expertise. Such innovation
epitomizes Rolex’s mastery of the design and manufacture of all the essential
components of the watch.

second time zone
A fixed inverted red triangle on the dial points to the chosen
reference time – the time at home or at the traveller’s usual
workplace – on the off-centre 24-hour disc. At a glance,
this 24-hour display clearly distinguishes daytime hours
from night-time hours in the other time zone (for example,
10 p.m. versus 10 a.m.). At any moment and in any location,
the global traveller knows if it is an appropriate time to
contact colleagues or loved ones on the other side of the
world.

7Function
The conventional centre hour, minute and seconds
hands indicate local time. It can be changed quickly and
effortlessly without affecting the precision of the traveller’s
timekeeping thanks to the Rolex jumping hour hand.
The hour hand is adjusted independently in one-hour
increments, either forwards and backwards, leaving the
minute and seconds hands, as well as the reference time,
unchanged. The date change is linked to the local time
and occurs within a few milliseconds at midnight. The date
displayed in the aperture is always the current date at the
traveller’s location.

discreet
month apertures
The months of the year are indicated in 12 discreet
apertures around the circumference of the dial: January
at 1 o’clock, February at 2 o’clock, and so on. The current
month is identified in a contrasting colour.

revolutionary
annual calendar
Inspired by the Saros, an astronomical phenomenon, the
Sky-Dweller’s date only requires one adjustment a year – on
the 1st of March, February having only 28 or 29 days. The
ingenuity of the mechanical system developed by Rolex
lies in its simple and systematic handling of the irregular
occurrence of 30- and 31-day months, allowing it to display
the correct date throughout the rest of the year. With the
Saros system, Rolex added only two gear ratios and four
gear wheels to its traditional instantaneous date calendar.
Such simplicity ensures a peerlessly robust and reliable
annual calendar function.

10Function
Function of the Sky-Dweller
saros system
The Saros system is designed around a fixed planetary gear
wheel (equivalent to the Sun) at the centre of the movement.
A satellite wheel (whose centre represents the Earth)
engages with the planetary wheel and rotates, orbiting
the planetary wheel in one month, driven by the date disc.
The satellite wheel is fitted with four fingers (the Moon) for the
four 30-day months (April, June, September and November).
These fingers reach a specific position at the end of each
month, and force the date to jump two days only in 30-day
months. After one year, the system realigns to its original
position, having completed a full Saros cycle.

saros: planetary
inspiration
At the heart of the Sky-Dweller movement lies a
revolutionary planetary mechanism inspired by the cyclical
alignment of Sun, Earth and Moon.
The Greek term Saros has been used since antiquity to
designate an astronomical cycle of alignment patterns
between the Sun, the Earth and the Moon which governs
the recurrence of eclipses. This phenomenon inspired the
design of the Sky-Dweller’s annual calendar mechanism.

When the Rolex Oyster first appeared in 1926, the fluted bezel had a functional
purpose: it served to screw the bezel onto the case helping to ensure the
waterproofness of the watch. It was, furthermore, identical to the fluting on the
case back, which was also screwed onto the case for the same reason, using
specific Rolex tools. Over time, the fluting became a purely aesthetic element,
available only in 18 ct yellow, Everose or white gold on Datejust and Day-Date
models. The fluted bezel is rotatable on the Sky-Dweller, where it has regained
functionality to allow easy selection of watch functions. Fluting is a genuine Rolex
signature feature, a mark of distinction.

13Features
The Sky-Dweller is equipped with calibre 9001, a self-
winding mechanical movement entirely developed and
manufactured by Rolex. Introduced in 2012, it is one of the
most complex calibres ever created by Rolex watchmakers.
Nonetheless, it is engineered to ensure simplicity of use:
a selector wheel on the outside edge of the 9001 ensures
the interaction of the movement and the bezel of the watch
to set the Sky-Dweller’s functions. Like all Rolex Perpetual
movements, the 9001 is a certified Swiss Chronometer, a
designation reserved for high-precision watches that have
successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing
Institute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all
Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.

To receive COSC certification as a Swiss

precision in a variety of positions and temperatures.
