Bernard Safran was born in 1924 in Brooklyn, NY to immigrant parents from Russia and Poland. He grew up in the rough neighborhood of Bensonhurst where organized crime operated and his best friend's father was a bookie. His childhood surrounded by the diverse people and vibrant atmosphere of early 20th century New York City left him with a realistic appreciation for the lives of everyday working class people.
