The Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, falls on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar which changes each year from late January to mid-February. Celebrations last for over a month and involve preparing new clothes and cleaning houses in red with themes of happiness, wealth, and longevity. Traditional foods are eaten at a family supper and children receive red envelopes with money the next morning, after which shops are closed for two weeks as people visit each other. The Lantern Festival on the last day features colorful lanterns and a dragon parade with firecrackers.
