Today we stand at a vital threshold. Within our grasp is the opportunity to end 30 years of suffering and death due to HIV/AIDS. Individuals and communities around the world have been mobilized toward prevention, and existing treatment can prolong life for many years. While we celebrate these successes, we reject any modicum of complacency. Now is the time to double down and finish the job. The world is fighting AIDS today just as it had previously fought to eliminate smallpox. For centuries, smallpox was a feared scourge that killed nearly half of those infected and maimed those that survived. A worldwide campaign to end the disease began in earnest in the late 1960s and by 1980 smallpox was officially eradicated.
Planet Aid anticipates the day when AIDS, too, will be stopped. To this end, we have been helping mobilize communities around the globe to increase HIV/AIDS prevention and care. With this special issue of the Planet Aid Post, we focus on the battle ahead. We also extend a warm welcome to those joining us on the forefront of this work,

A Review on International Donor Agencies and the Control of Malaria in Nigeri...AJHSSR Journal
The study has examined the role of International Donor Agencies in the control of malaria in
Nigeria. The study becomes necessary because of the increase in cases of malaria and high rate of infant
mortality in the country. The role of donor agencies, national and state ministries of health is very important in
reducing these challenges in Nigeria. The study reviewed available secondary information sources. The study
revealed that the role of International donor agencies includes supporting the State Governments with funds,
provision of free mosquito treated nets, provision of subsidized drugs, provision of vaccines for childhood killer
diseases etc. Some of the challenge affecting donor agencies includes diversion of funds of by relevant bodies
for personal use, lack of political will to implement programme, cultural and religious beliefs about sickness and
illness etc. Based on these, some recommendations were made on the fights against malaria which includes
improved funding by government, zero tolerance to corruption, recruitment of more health personnel,
establishments of more primary health centres especially in the rural areas.

“It is estimated that the majority of all new, emerging and re-emerging diseases affecting humans at the beginning of the twenty-first century have originated from animals.
Humans are at increased risk of contracting diseases of animal origin because of a wide range of interconnected variables, including mass urbanization, large-scale livestock production, increased travel and so on.” (OIE)

Despite conclusive evidence from the 1st investigation being presented to the EU and national government along with a series of urgent recommendations set out by Dogs Trust to help curb the trade, the puppy trafficking trade has continued unabated. In early 2015, Dogs Trust went back into Eastern Europe to highlight that the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is still being used as a cover by commercial breeders and dealers in Lithuania and Romania on a regular basis to illegally import puppies, often in horrendous conditions, and transporting them thousands of miles without their mothers.

New Tool in the Global Fight against Rabies
Blueprint for Canine Rabies Elimination and Human Rabies Prevention
Manhattan, KS, June 24, 2010 – In an effort to help countries find and implement realistic solutions to
reduce the burden of rabies throughout their territory, the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, Partners for
Rabies Prevention and FAO's Regional Central Animal Health in Bamako, under the coordination of Dr
Tiziana Lembo, have launched the new on-line "Blueprint for Canine Rabies Elimination and Human
Rabies Prevention" (www.rabiesblueprint.com).
“Rabies continues to be an active threat in many countries throughout the world”, said Global Alliance for
Rabies Control’s Executive Director Dr Deborah Briggs. “The Blueprint is a breakthrough for the global
rabies community and serves as a guide for countries that want to prevent human rabies by eliminating
canine rabies within their borders.”
The Blueprint is applicable for countries where rabies is present and also for countries where rabies has
been re-introduced. It brings together recommendations from international health organizations and other
global stakeholders involved in rabies control. Published data from the field and case study reports are
also incorporated into the groundbreaking document.
“The Blueprint is not meant to replace existing material or national guidelines”, said Briggs. “It has been
developed to serve as an easy-to-use guide and a one-stop website where national stakeholders can find
up-to-date normative and practical information on how to prevent and control rabies.”
Currently, the Blueprint is available in English and French. Additional languages are soon to follow and
will help increase the website's usage in other countries. More chapters addressing wildlife rabies control
will also be added in the future.
“We invite everyone involved in rabies control throughout the world to utilize the Blueprint and look
forward to comments and feedback on how we may improve the website.”
Global Alliance for Rabies Control
