Things To Remember
• Your laptop and how you use it is governed by:
• District Policies
• Student Code of Conduct
• Student / Parent Acceptable Use Policy
• State Laws
• Federal Laws
Software Tips
• Do not add or remove software from your device.
• The Technology Department will update software on the device
throughout the year
Screen Cleaning Tips
• Wipe the screen gently with a clean, soft cloth.
• Do NOT use anything abrasive to clean the screen.
• Do NOT use any soaps or detergents to clean your screen.
Battery Facts To Remember
• Charge your batteries at home DAILY!
• A battery stores about 4 hours of electricity
Email and Activity Warnings
• Any activity performed on your laptop/Chromebook or with district
resources can be legally monitored.
• Emails written or received using district resources can be opened and
read by district personnel.
• Files or email created or sent to you using district resources can be
inspected by district personnel with or without your knowledge.
• Keep all files and emails educationally appropriate!
Report Illegal Use
• You are responsible for reporting security problems.
• If you are aware of other students engaging in illegal activities,
such as hacking, report this activity to a teacher, technician, or
an administrator. Do not discuss it with other students.
Laptop/Chromebook Use
• NEVER use a friend’s laptop or Chromebook.
• NEVER loan your laptop or Chromebook to anyone.
• NEVER give out your password or username.
• NEVER delete files, with or without permission, belonging to someone else.
Passing Responsibilities
• When passing from one classroom to another:
• ALWAYS shut down your laptop/Chromebook. Your hard drive can
crash or become ruined by moving laptops/Chromebooks when
they are still powered on.
• ALWAYS disconnect cords before packing up your
laptop/Chromebook.
• ALWAYS secure your laptop/Chromebook properly in its case.
Proper Use of Laptops
•District issued devices should be
used for educational purposes only!
The 3 P’s
• Always follow the guidelines of the 3 P’s:
• Privacy: Never give out any personal information (name, address,
phone number, etc.) to anyone over the Internet.
• APPROPRIATE: Only educationally appropriate activities are permitted.
• PROPERTY: The laptop/Chromebook does not belong to you. It is
entrusted to you and must be returned. Protect it at all times. NEVER
leave it unattended.
Copyright Laws
• If you borrow information from the Internet or any other source
for projects, papers, etc., you MUST give credit to the owner and
cite your sources.
• You must abide by the Fair Use Guidelines.
• Failing to do any of the above is illegal and a violation of
copyright laws.
Communication Expectations
• When using any technology resources belonging to the district (the
network, your laptop/Chromebook, etc.) it is expected and required
that you
• ALWAYS …
• Be polite (ex: email, message boards, etc.)
• Use appropriate language.
• Maintain your privacy (never give out your name, phone number, etc.
using email, on the Internet, or over the network).
District Access Rights
• At anytime, teachers, technicians, SRO Officers,
and administrators can open or seize your district
issued device without warning.
Report Theft IMMEDIATELY
• Williamsburg County School District is the legal owner of the
laptop/Chromebook.
• You are responsible for damages made to district property.
• If your laptop/Chromebook is lost while on campus, report the
incident to the teacher or an administrative staff immediately.
• If your device is stolen off campus, file a police report with local
law enforcement and provide the school with a copy of the police
report.
TAKING CARE OF YOUR
LAPTOP/CHROMEBOOK
• Food and drink should be kept away from your laptop or
Chromebook.
• Never place heavy objects on top of your laptop/Chromebook.
• Never leave your device in a hot car.
• Never leave your device in an unsupervised area.
• Never pickup your laptop/Chromebook by the screen.
TAKING CARE OF YOUR
LAPTOP/CHROMEBOOK
• Do not poke the screen with anything that will mark or scratch
the screen surface.
• Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid.
• ALWAYS support a laptop or Chromebook from its bottom with the
lid closed.
• NEVER transport your laptop or Chromebook with the power cord
plugged in.
