.NET Fest 2019. Сергей Медведев. How serverless makes Integration TDD a reali...NETFest
Do you recall those buzz words like TDD, BDD? Yep, but we know their problems as well!
TDD is too granular. BDD is too coarse-grained.
Unit tests are too chatty. BDD is too abstract.
TDD requires knowledge of implementation details. BDD does not care about implementation at all.
What is in the middle? Integration tests. Let's be Integration driven then! OK, then how to build infrastructure to run Integration tests? Should we start with IaaS first? How to speed up the development and take into account non-foundational requirements like scaling, security borders, isolation, etc. from the very beginning? To answer the questions, we would combine Integration test-based development with serverless (AWS) to solve a typical business task. Based on the example, we would show how to create a solid foundation for further refactoring/refining of the overall solution and concreting it with Unit tests.
Acceptance tests would be left for home exercise ;)

Improving fault tolerance and scaling out in Kafka Streams with Bill Bejeck |...HostedbyConfluent
Kafka Streams is the popular stream processing component of Apache Kafka®. One of its best features is stateful operations. Kafka Streams works hard to ensure stateful operations can scale horizontally and survive failures, but doing so takes time. Kafka Streams offers the concept of ""standby-tasks,"" allowing for near-zero downtime failover, but surprisingly this feature still isn't widely used. The could be for various reasons, from lack of awareness to needing additional resources.
This presentation will cover how standby tasks work and how they're enabled. Additionally, I'll cover the work done in KIP-441 that enables faster scaling out for stateful tasks and provides more balanced stateful assignments. I'll also dive into the consumer rebalance protocol improvements that enable KIP-441 to be effective.
Attendees of this presentation will walk away understanding how and when to use standby tasks, leverage the improvements from KIP-441, and have a deeper understanding of how Kafka Streams works with state.

Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

How can businesses survive in a world where Artificial Intelligence is becoming the present as well as the future of technology, and how does the Metaverse fit into business strategy when futurist ideas are developing into reality at accelerated rates? How do we do this when our data isn't up to scratch? How can we move towards success with our data so we are set up for the Metaverse when it arrives?
How can you help your company evolve, adapt, and succeed using Artificial Intelligence and the Metaverse to stay ahead of the competition? What are the potential issues, complications, and benefits that these technologies could bring to us and our organizations? In this session, Jen Stirrup will explain how to start thinking about these technologies as an organisation.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Hello, I’m Carol Gordon, Project Manager for the CataList project at BookNet Canada. Thanks for joining me today for the 2022 update on what the CataList team has been up to for the past year, and a look at what’s on the roadmap ahead.
I can say it’s been another busy year, so I’m going to jump right into the update on the largest piece of development work we took on in the last year.
Well, the CataList team has been largely focused this part year on bringing our integration project with BTLF in Quebec to a launch-ready point.
For those not familiar with this integration project, or what Memento is, Memento is a product that BTLF has managed previously with Electre in France, and it has two key parts:
The first is bibliographic data for French-language titles – Like Bowker in the US, the BTLF manages and standardizes collected bibliographic data and makes it available to subscribers for a fee.
And the second part is various data access points, primarily by web interface and API.
And so through this partnership, BTLF will be moving the data access points from Electre’s platform in France, to the BNC CataList platform here in Canada – giving us a unique opportunity to house both French and English titles in a single location for system users, and consolidate resources for continued feature development that serves the Canadian market. Memento will be available via its own domain for subscriber access, but all Memento users will automatically also have access to any French or English publisher data in CataList as well, and orders can be submitted from the Memento site direct to reps on the CataList side.
Of course, the features that we’ve been working on for the Memento integration also have value and application in the English market in Canada, and as development of those additions and improvements in the system have been completed, we’ve been rolling them out on the CataList platform throughout the past year.
Many of the improvements have been focused around the site search functionality.
Quick search, which is the search box in the main navigation bar, has had tweaks to include series titles in the index for ease of searching for items by series.
The Advanced Search form has been updated to allow search by availability and other new criteria, and results can be refined by more data points including availability, Thema subject, and the products form detail – for example, mass market or tall rack paperback.
We’ve also added grid column customization at the individual user level, on catalogue grid views as well as search results grid – for both the online views and Excel or CSV export options.
You can also now save your searches, by subject category, ISBN list, ISBN prefix, titles added in the last number of days, or any other combination of available search parameters. Any search can be saved, a quick search, a catalogue search, or an advanced search.
Saved searches can be easily run by clicking the Saved Search link below the quick search, and run, edited, copied or deleted on the Manage Saved Searches page.
We’ve also moved ahead some CataList-only features this year, including pulling in stock availability and current prices from distributor position files. For the moment, this data shows Canadian sources and available on the title detail page only. We’ll show all the sources and details we have available, including prices and discount codes where we have them in the publisher data. Over 90% of titles in the CataList system are from suppliers that provide position files, and we’re now talking to system users about the usefulness of this data and other workflows where it might be valuable to make this data viewable.
The last feature I wanted to draw attention to today is the accessibility data. This primarily affects ebook listings in CataList, but in general, it’s a great way to communicate in your ONIX data the efforts we’re seeing publishers put into accessibility features in their ebooks. If you’re doing the work of making your ebooks accessible – whether they are listed in CataList or not, - tell people about it in your metadata! Again, there are some great blog posts on the BookNet Canada website with information on how to structure this in ONIX 2.1 and ONIX 3.0.
Moving beyond system features, we’ve also learned a lot this year, in our work with BTLF, about some differences in standards between the English and French markets in Canada, and I wanted to take a moment today to share some of those details.
Firstly, the Québec book market runs fully on ONIX 3.0 data, ONIX 2.1 is no longer supported. This isn’t unexpected, with the strong ties in the market to France, which has also embraced the ONIX 3.0 standard. This ONIX 3.0 requirement has also been a launch-point for the long-planned CataList system upgrades to also begin supporting incoming ONIX 3.0 fully, which we intend to complete this coming year, though CataList will continue to also support ONIX 2.1 incoming files for the foreseeable future as well.
While BISAC remains the preeminent subject classification code system in English North America, Thema is the primary subject classification in Quebec. We’ve seen Thema adoption ramping up over the past year in the English data in Canada, and I’d expect to see that trend continue, but if publishers are looking at selling into Quebec, you’ll want to look into supporting Thema codes to support those efforts.
If you’re new to Thema, BookNet offers lots of entry points to learn about how to use Thema codes and provide them in your data. There are blog posts and standards documentation available online, we regularly work with EDitEUR in the UK (they are the organization that manages the Thema standard) to offer training courses for Canadians, and we also worked with BISG in the US to build a converter between BISAC and Thema to help ease adoption challenges. You can find information on the BISAC-to-Thema converter at the link on the screen.
Lastly, Dewey is an expected data point. Libraries in Quebec are still mainly using MARC21 for data exchanges, but increasingly they are getting that data via crosswalks to MARC format from publisher ONIX data. Even on the English Canada side, we are hearing more demand for Dewey Decimal support in our own products, as usage of BookNet services by libraries continues to increase. SalesData and LibraryData are in the process of adding Dewey display from Bowker’s data in those systems, based on feedback from librarians using those system. CataList has already added support for an optional Dewey column in grid views and exports – and we’d love to have publisher data to populate into those columns for the English market as well as the French, as feedback through our CataList user group has indicated that librarians find value in that data for English books as well.
So, a bit about what’s ahead for CataList in the coming year. I mentioned our fully ONIX 3.0 transition plans already, but looking ahead at a few upcoming planned features
We’re also looking at building on the work this past year on order features, particularly with regard to improving the automated communications around orders placed or shared in the system. We completed work on in-system notifications for orders set to reps in January, and have moved on to setting functionality in paces to automate some email communications when orders are sent to reps. We are completing requirements gathering now, and expect to begin work on this feature soon.
Another new feature, requested by CataList users, on both the French and English sides, is the ability to collaborate on custom catalogues. Currently a custom catalogue can be created by one person, and can be viewed only by the speciifed recipients – there is no way for multiple people in an account to collaborate on a custom catalogue.
The feature we are working on here will allow people to keep their custom catalogue private, the way they work now, or open up editorial access on custom catalogues to everyone in their account. We are also including in this feature some tools for account managers to access and edit all custom catalogues within their own account to help with management of catalogues posted to publisher pages, or when staff turnover occurs.
The last major item we have selected for development this year is the addition of a tool to add and manage F&G’s. We already handle several sample type files and interior images – this feature will be a little more complex in terms of permission management and access restrictions, and will also likely require some upload functionality and expiry date management in CataList directly. This feature is still in the planning stages, so if you have thoughts about your own company’s needs relating to this feature, we’re happy to take any comments or feedback you might have.
When I say the F&G was the ‘last’, to clarify, this list is not exclusive. We’ll be continuing to work with our user group and direct feedback from other clients to identify and prioritize other features and improvements that may be able to be worked into our plans for the remainder of the year, or prioritized for coming years.
We’re always happy to hear from our clients and system users about what working well for you in CataList and what the system could do to make your tasks easier. Thanks for joining me today, and don’t hesitate to get in touch with me, or the support team at catalist@booknetcanada.ca.
