Kalpna Patel: Hello, everyone. Welcome to Tech Forum Online. I'm Kalpna Patel, Product
Coordinator for Sales Data and LibraryData, and I'm here to share what we've been up to this
past year with the LoanStars program and to give you a glimpse of what's coming up in the
year ahead.
Before we get started, I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge that here at BookNet
Canada, our operations are remote. Our colleagues contribute their work from the traditional
territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee, the
Wyandot, the Mi'kmaq, the Ojibwa of Fort William First Nation, the Three Fires
Confederacy of First Nations (which includes the Ojibwa, the Odawa, and the Potawatomie),
and the Métis, the original nations and peoples of the lands we now call Beeton, Brampton,
Guelph, Halifax, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Vaughan, and Windsor. We encourage you to visit
the native-land.ca website to learn more about the peoples whose land you are joining from
today. Moreover, BookNet endorses the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission of Canada and supports an ongoing shift from gatekeeping to spacemaking in
the book industry.
Launched in 2016, the LoanStars program began as an opportunity for library staff across the
country to nominate and select their favourite and most highly anticipated forthcoming adult
fiction, non-fiction, and juvenile titles. Books with the most votes were featured in monthly
top 10 lists promoted through the LoanStars website, social media, email marketing, and
digital and physical promotion in libraries.
In 2023, after years of tallying votes and collecting feedback from program participants, we
moved from collecting recommendations made by Canadian library staff on individual titles
to using information collected by our LibraryData aggregation service. LibraryData collects
weekly information on loans, holds, renewals, copies owned, copies out, and copies on order
from several library systems and over 800 branches.
Each week, we aggregate the data together into an all-libraries view of the country. And
today, LoanStars relies on this same information to compile data-driven lists of the top books
ordered by Canadian libraries as an indicator of the most popular forthcoming titles, and the
books library staff are most excited about. Titles with the most orders become LoanStars' top
picks, and if your library participates in LibraryData, you're automatically participating in the
LoanStars program.
For more information about what kinds of reporting LibraryData can provide, or to find out
how your library can participate, please check out my colleague Lily's LibraryData
presentation linked in the description below, or contact us at librarydata@booknetcanada.ca.
It's been a full year since we've implemented this change to the program. And in 2023, we
published 11 adult top picks lists featuring a total of 110 fiction and nonfiction titles. In
addition to monthly adult top picks lists, we've also published six bi-monthly junior lists
featuring a total of 60 of the hottest new juvenile and young adult releases.
New for 2023, we introduced bi-monthly specialty lists to highlight Canadian releases. The
first of five specialty lists was published in March of last year and was made up entirely of
Canadian contributors. All 10 fiction and nonfiction books on this list have at least one
author, illustrator, translator or editor who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of
Canada.
In 2023, we published three adult lists and two junior lists for a total of 50 Canadian titles
featured and promoted through the LoanStars program. This means that in 2023, we
compiled, published and promoted 22 lists featuring a total of 220 adult and juvenile titles.
This year, we will continue using LibraryData to find the 10 most anticipated books
published monthly as ordered by libraries across Canada. We look forward to publishing two
lists each month, alternating between adult, juvenile and Canadian releases. Every month,
we'll see the publication of an adult list and either a junior list or specialty list. For the
months featuring specialty lists, we will continue to alternate between adult Canadian and
adult junior titles.
To have a look at both current and past LoanStars lists, head over to loanstars.ca where you'll
find the latest adult and junior top picks featured on the home page. From there, you can
navigate to the archive lists and download the latest promotional poster. Another way to gain
access to LoanStars is to sign up for our mailing list, which you can also do through the link
provided on the home page to get monthly lists delivered straight to your inbox.
The Canadian adult and junior specialty lists can be found on the BookNet Canada blog, and
many of the Canadian top picks are featured and promoted on the LoanStars' Instagram feed.
Finally, each list is published in a digital catalogue on CataList. Just follow the link beneath
the LoanStars logo in the top right corner of the CataList home page to browse each list by
month and to find marketing information for specific titles, get early access to publisher
catalogues, brief MARC record exports for bibliographic data, and ordering support. And
remember, libraries continue to be able to view samples, excerpts, reading guides, teacher
guides, and interior images just by signing in to your CataList account.
For 2024, we look forward to monitoring and collecting feedback on the LoanStars program.
We'd love to hear from you and encourage you to drop us a line at
loanstars@booknetcanada.ca. Thanks for watching, and don't forget to sign up for our e-news
newsletter for updates on all BookNet activities and events, research, and reports.
