A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Clark Swanson, a prominent entrepreneur and
philanthropist, has been actively working to improve the
public school system in Nevada through the formation of a
think tank known as NEED (Nevada Educational
Enrichment Directive). NEED has brought together leaders
from state and municipalities, nationally recognized
educators, and business leaders to develop bipartisan
recommendations and policies to reshape Nevada's public
schools.
According to recent data, the State of Nevada ranks 49th
out of 50 in public education, with only Oklahoma ranking
lower. The state also ranks 46th in school systems, which
measure student access, school quality, and student
safety. These rankings have been a major concern for
Clark Swanson, who chose to send his four children to
private school due to his disappointment with the quality
of education offered by the Nevada public school system.
3. Through the formation of NEED, Clark Swanson has
gathered a diverse group of leaders to come together and
work towards a common goal of improving the education
system for all children in Nevada. The think tank has
gained the support of civic leaders, education scholars,
law enforcement, and business leaders in the community,
who all recognize the importance of investing in the
future of our children.
NEED has been working tirelessly to develop a
comprehensive plan to improve the public school system
in Nevada. The think tank has been researching best
practices and successful initiatives from other states and
countries to create a roadmap for the future of education
in Nevada. The goal is to provide all children in the state
with access to a quality education, regardless of their zip
code, income level, or background.
4. The recommendations and policies being developed by
NEED focus on several key areas, including early childhood
education, teacher recruitment and retention, curriculum
development, and school safety. The think tank recognizes
that a comprehensive approach is necessary to create a
successful education system that prepares students for
the challenges of the 21st century.
Clark Swanson's passion for education reform stems from
his belief that all children should have access to a quality
education that prepares them for success in life. He
recognizes the importance of education in creating a
better future for our communities and our country.
Swanson has been a strong advocate for education reform
and has donated significant financial resources to support
educational initiatives in Nevada.
5. NEED is an example of Clark Swanson's commitment to
making a positive impact in the world. Through his
leadership and vision, the think tank is working to improve
the education system in Nevada and provide all children
with the opportunity to succeed. By bringing together
leaders from diverse backgrounds, NEED is creating a
platform for collaboration and innovation in education
that will benefit the entire state. For inspiration, NEED
has looked to the Chandler School and collaborator Dana
Blackhurst. Mr. Blackhurst credentials include Harvard
University School of Education; South Carolina Middle
School Teacher of the Year (‘90-’91); Educator Award,
Carolina Branch of the IDA; and Inaugural Recipient of
SCISA’s Betty B. Disher Educational Innovation Award.
6. Clark Swanson's formation of the NEED think tank
represents a significant step forward in improving the
public school system in Nevada. The state's rankings in
education have been a major concern for Swanson, who
believes that all children deserve access to a quality
education. Through the development of bipartisan
recommendations and policies, NEED is working towards
creating a comprehensive approach to education reform in
Nevada. Clark Swanson's passion for education and
commitment to making a positive impact in the world is
an inspiration to us all. We expect Mr. Swanson, together
with Governor Joe Lombardo, and educational legislators
of Nevada to make positive changes for the future of our
children.
