Oxygen enrichment can increase the risk of fires and explosions if not handled properly. Oxygen is heavier than air and can cause materials not normally flammable in air to burn fiercely. Any oils, greases or other contaminants should never be used with oxygen equipment as they can spontaneously ignite. Proper equipment should be leak tested and free of damage or contaminants, and flashback arrestors should be used, to safely manage the risks of oxygen enrichment.

An Engie Fabricom employee was injured while using a hand tool to align a pipe spool valve flanged joint. The podger end of the tool came out of the bolt hole as the employee exerted upward force, causing the tool to rapidly move up and strike the employee in the face. The injury required medical treatment at a local clinic. An investigation found the activity was not sufficiently planned, lifting equipment or assistance from a rigger would have been safer, and the employee placed themselves in the "line of fire." To prevent recurrence, all similar work was stopped until a safe method was established, the need to always select the safest equipment and method was reinforced, and the incident was communicated across the business.

Agenda for next NESHEP main meeting Tuesday 1st February Venue – Wilton Centre @ 10:00am Location – Exhibition Hall ASBESTOS – Dr. Patrick Morton, the Managing Director of “Lucion Environmental” will be joining us at our February meeting to give a presentation on Asbestos and the problems it can bring. Lucion Environmental are specialists in advanced Asbestos Management and Dr Morton’s presentation will generally follow the lines of the problems with asbestos, safe exposure limits, compliance with the regulations and current duty to manage. He will also give an update on the regulations and cover Surveyor competency, the cost of getting it wrong, and HSE enforcement. NORTH EAST SAFETY GROUPS PROPOSED MERGER – David Swalwell, Senior Operations Manager of Deborah Services Ltd and Chair of the NESHEP Training & Development Subgroup will give a presentation on NESHEP; providing our Teesside Safety Group colleagues with an overview of NESHEP and what potential benefits would be realised if both groups were to merge. Members of both groups will be given the opportunity to voice their opinions/concerns during the presentation which will assist the leaders of both groups to determine a way forward for the benefit of our member companies and industry as a whole. HSE UPDATE – Dr David Shallow will again be giving his very much appreciated update from the HSE. David has moved across to the Hazardous Installations Division of the HSE which I am sure will serve to enhance the HSEs input to our future meetings.
