PEDAGOGY
Engaged pedagogy establishes a mutual
relationship between teacher and
students that nurtures the growth of both
parties, creating an atmosphere of trust
and commitment that is always present
when genuine learning happens.
 Looking at 0-8 years as a continuum
 Universal Access For children of 3-6 years: access to free, safe, high
quality ECCE at Anganwadis/Pre-school/Balvatika
 Foundational Learning Curriculum For age group of 3-8 divided in two
parts: (i) From age 3-6 in ECCE and (ii) age 6 to 8 in class I and II in
primary school (there is mention of sub frame of 0-3 )
 Multifaceted Flexible, multi-level, play-based, activity-based, and inquiry
based learning
 Preparatory Class Prior to the age of 5 every child will move to a
“Preparatory Class” or “Balvatika” (that is, before Class 1).
 Implementation to be jointly carried out by Ministries of HRD, Women
and Child Development (WCD), Health and Family Welfare (HFW), and
Tribal Affairs.
The preparatory stage under the National Education
Policy will cover school education from class 3-5 with
a focus on experimental learning.
It will cover the age group of 8-11 years.
The focus would shift to play, discovery and activity-
based and interaction classroom learning, including
reading, writing, speaking, physical education, art,
languages, science and mathematics.
The focus till this stage would remain on the
development of language and numeracy skills.
This will cover school education from class 6-8 and will be for the
age group of 11-14 years. The structure aims to transform the
pedagogy from the existing system to a more experiential learning
in the sciences, mathematics, arts, social sciences and humanities.
The focus would be on critical learning objectives and not on
learning by rote.
What is Experiential Learning ?
Experiential learning is the process of
learning through experience, and is
more narrowly defined as "learning
through reflection on doing". Hands-
on learning . It is about Why, How and
When the subject applies in your life.
The stage supports the students in critical and analytical thinking, multidisciplinary
study and students can choose subjects without any stream restrictions. The
Secondary Stage will comprise of four years of multidisciplinary study, building on the
subject-oriented pedagogical and curricular style of the Middle Stage, but with
greater depth, greater critical thinking, greater attention to life aspirations,
and greater flexibility and student choice of subjects.
1.Multidisciplinary approach
2.Greater flexibility and student choice of subjects
3.Vocational Skills
4.No hard separation among ‘curricular’,
‘extracurricular’, or ‘co-curricular’, among ‘arts’,
‘humanities’, and ‘sciences’, or between ‘vocational’
or ‘academic’ streams.
 The key overall thrust of curriculum and pedagogy reform across
all stages will be to move the education system towards real
understanding and towards learning how to learn - and away from
the culture of rote learning as is largely present today.
 The aim of education will not only be cognitive development, but
also building character and creating holistic and well-rounded
individuals equipped with the key 21st century skills.
 Specific sets of skills and values across domains will be identified
for integration and incorporation at each stage of learning, from
pre-school to higher education.
Page-12
 Curriculum content will be reduced in each subject to its core essentials, to make
space for critical thinking and more holistic, inquiry-based, discovery-based,
discussion-based, and analysis based learning.
 The mandated content will focus on key concepts, ideas, applications, and problem
solving.
 Teaching and learning will be conducted in a more interactive manner; questions
will be encouraged, and classroom sessions will regularly contain more fun,
creative, collaborative, and exploratory activities for students for deeper and more
experiential learning.
Experiential learning examples:
Going to the zoo to learn about animals through observation, instead of reading about them.
Growing a garden to learn about photosynthesis instead of watching a movie about it.
Hoping on a bicycle to try and learn to ride, instead of listening to your parent explain the
concept.
Art-integrated education will be established in classroom transactions for creating joyful
classrooms as well as for absorbing the Indian ethos through integration of Indian art &
culture in the teaching learning process at every level.
By including indigenous sports & physical activities the students will develop skills such
as collaboration, self-initiative, self-direction, self-discipline, teamwork, responsibility,
citizenship etc. It will also help students to adopt fitness as a lifelong attitude & to
achieve the related life skills.
 Students will be given increased flexibility and choice of subjects to study, particularly in
secondary school - including subjects in physical education, the arts and crafts, and
vocational skills – so that they can design their own paths of study and life plans.
 Holistic development and a wide choice of subjects and courses year to year will be the
new distinguishing feature of secondary school education.
 There will be no hard separation among ‘curricular’, ‘extracurricular ’, or ‘co-
curricular’, among ‘arts’, ‘humanities’, and ‘sciences’, or between ‘vocational’ or
‘academic’ streams.
 Subjects such as physical education, the arts and crafts, and vocational skills, in addition
to science, humanities, and mathematics, will be incorporated throughout the school
curriculum, with a consideration for what is interesting and safe at each age.
Page-13
This is particularly about secondary school i.e. the 4 stage of learning in
classes 9th,10th,11th and 12th.
Flexibility-
Last 4 years will have option to select subject.
Students will be given increased flexibility and choices of subjects to study.
No Hard Separations-
There will be no hard separation of streams .
Students can design their own paths to study and life plans by choosing their own subject
mixing different streams also. Like a child can select- Humanities with Maths with classical
dance with physical education and English so here you can see that all subjects chosen are of
different streams.
In this way a students can open many fields for himself and design his own future, in
school itself and will be given more choices in career.
Now this was about students, but schools also have to justify with all level
of streams and subjects taught.
Semester System-
All the four stages of school covering all the regions may be given flexibility of
dividing syllabus in semester and alternate teaching days for different subjects.
This will allow to more exposure to wider range of subjects with greater
flexibility and enjoyment.
Promoting Multilingualism-
Multilingualism has great cognitive benefits and children understands better in
their mother tongues.
The power of language in teaching and learning is well understood, and thus we
will understand it better in coming slides…….
Page -14
As a medium of instruction: Wherever possible, the medium of instruction until at least
Grade 5, but preferably till Grade 8 and beyond it will be the home language/mother-
tongue/local language/regional language.
The three-language formula will continue to be implemented to promote
multilingualism as well as promote national unity.
NEP states that there will be greater flexibility in the three-language formula. But no
language will be imposed on any State.
To learn three languages will be the choice of States, regions, and students themselves,
as long as at least two of the three languages are native to India.
According to the HRD Ministry of Education, the three-language formula will continue to
be implemented in schools "with greater flexibility" but "no language will be imposed
on any state."
 All students of public or private will have the option of learning 2 years of classical
language of India.
 Students will also learn about the cultures of the world to enrich their global
knowledge and mobility.
 The teaching of language will be based on experimental learning.- Indian sign
language will be standardized across the country. Local sign language will be taught
as well.
Page-15
Students should have flexibility in choosing their individual
curriculum
• Health and nutrition
• Fitness and wellness
• Vocational exposure
• Environmental awareness
Mathematical and computational thinking should be
increased throughout the school years. Coding will be
introduces in middle stage.
