Cloud - moving applications to the cloudJan Wiersma
EvoSwitch is a datacenter provider located in the Netherlands that offers colocation and hosting services near a major internet exchange. Their datacenters provide high security, autonomous power supply, and 24/7 support. Migrating applications to the cloud requires assessing each application to determine the best path - whether to move to infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), or software as a service (SaaS). A cost analysis should also be conducted to understand the total cost of ownership and return on investment for different cloud options. No single migration strategy will work for all applications, so each one needs to be evaluated separately to choose the best cloud path.
The state of the Datacenter - what is nextJan Wiersma
The document discusses the state of datacenters and what may come next. It notes that Data Center Pulse has nearly 2,000 end user members from 66 countries who influence the industry. Various topics are then presented on datacenter infrastructure, operations, efficiency trends and challenges, including a focus on reducing PUE and integrating sustainability. The conclusion is that data center owners need infrastructure that enables rapid change, high efficiency and low total cost of ownership.
Going cloud ; IT Phoenix from the flamesJan Wiersma
The document discusses the evolution of IT and data centers. It describes how IT systems have moved from mainframes to mini computers to PCs and how data usage and costs have increased significantly over time. It then discusses how cloud computing is transforming the traditional IT model by giving users more flexibility and empowerment while changing the role of IT departments and introducing new approaches to governance. The document advocates for experimenting with cloud computing while also obtaining proper legal advice and developing exit strategies.

My presentation for the Green application hosting workshop.
Topic: how transparency in energy measurement leads to change in behavior.
http://kngs.wikidot.com/events:ws-schubergphilis/
- The document describes a data center company that provides 24/7 on-site security, efficient cooling systems, green energy usage, and reliable connectivity.
- The data center currently uses 6,500 sqm of space and has the capacity for expansion up to 40,000 sqm. It has a current power capacity of 20MVA with plans to expand beyond 60MVA.
- The data center uses outside air for cooling 96% of the time and indirect adiabatic cooling 4% of the time, achieving a high PUE efficiency of 1.2 for a 200kW module.
Datacentre Expo - case study consolidationJan Wiersma
The Dutch police force consolidated from 26 regions into 7+1 regions to improve information sharing. This required standardizing infrastructure and consolidating data centers. The consolidation involved selecting new data center sites, rebuilding infrastructure, and focusing on managing the physical aspects of the data centers like power, cooling, cabling, and security. Looking ahead, changes in policing like mobility, disappearing boundaries, and anonymity will require the data centers to focus on availability from a minimum of two locations, sustainability, scalability, security, and using available energy and fiber infrastructure for future expansion.

The document provides an overview of the EvoSwitch data center and discusses sustainability in data centers. Specifically:
1) EvoSwitch offers a secure, efficient and sustainable data center with 24/7 security, green energy usage, efficient cooling systems, and support for customers.
2) Data centers can significantly improve their sustainability by increasing energy efficiency in demand, supply, and reducing costs. Metrics like PUE are important to measure efficiency.
3) While progress has been made, most data centers still have opportunities to improve efficiency in equipment intake temperatures and better measurement of energy usage.
The document discusses DCIM (data center infrastructure management). It notes that DCIM involves collecting lots of data about the data center's infrastructure, building a data model, and integrating tools and processes. The key aspects of DCIM are looking at existing data and how it flows, identifying information gaps, determining which applications to replace or integrate with DCIM, and creating a data center facility information model. Great integration of DCIM can lead to influencing behavior, designing more efficient data centers, and optimizing data centers for the smart grid.
This document describes a 63-year-old woman diagnosed with chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus in 2006. Previous treatments including topical agents, hydroxychloroquine, prednisone, dapsone, and methotrexate provided no improvement. A skin biopsy showed lymphocytic infiltration and dermal mucin deposition consistent with chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Laboratory tests found antinuclear antibodies and positive anti-SSA/RO antibodies. The document asks for a proposed therapeutic option for this treatment-resistant case.
The document exposes three myths about placemaking:
1. Design is not the only factor - creating a memorable experience through unconventional design can turn a space into a place.
2. Extensive planning is not necessary - placemaking is an iterative process where small improvements can organically transform an area over time.
3. Community consultation is not essential first - taking action and later adjusting the vision based on community feedback can be more effective than lengthy upfront consultation.
This presentation discusses moving enterprise IT to public cloud. It notes that enterprise IT organizations face complex environments, growing costs, and lack of resources. The cloud looks like an option to help address these issues and generate business advantage. While there are challenges with cloud adoption related to security, control, and trust, the presentation argues that cloud providers may offer greater availability, security, and efficiency than traditional IT environments through their large scale operations. It advocates a hybrid approach for enterprises, moving commodity services to public cloud while using private cloud for high value services and legacy systems, with a goal of saying goodbye to legacy over time.
ICEflo is a web-based SaaS solution that manages time-constrained changes while protecting service availability. It uses a unique real-time forecasting engine, continuous monitoring, and automated alerts. ICEflo facilitates the construction and execution of change implementation plans (Schedules of Events). It is best used when time is limited and high availability is critical. ICEflo provides benefits like reduced risk, costs, and increased control over changes.
The document proposes a model called the Total Community Retrofit to help communities transition to a more sustainable and resilient way of living. The model involves 4 phases: 1) developing the model and gaining stakeholder support, 2) creating a local client group, 3) detailed local planning and project prioritization, and 4) launching specific retrofit, infrastructure and community projects. The goal is to significantly advance the UK's capability to deliver solutions for a sustainable future by establishing practical research collaborations and sharing outcomes internationally.
