Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years for fighting against apartheid laws in South Africa that discriminated against black people. While in prison, he continued his fight for equality and democracy. After his release, he became South Africa's first black president to help establish a non-racial democratic government and reconcile the people after the end of apartheid.
