Community
A community is a group of people who live in the same local area or share a cultural background. There are several community spaces in Baldock and Ashwell, including community centres, libraries, parks, pubs, and tennis courts. It is important to have spaces for community members to relax, hold events, and for families and children to play. Without safe places to spend time, teenagers may find less safe alternatives. Examples of community campaigns include Friends of Norton Common, which aims to preserve nature reserves, and The Triangle Garden, a community garden open to all ages in Hitchin.

Brighton & Hove budget cuts 2015-16

Shelter of Hope Ministries (Desarmes, Haiti)
The Shelter of Hope Ministries organization in Desarmes, Haiti seeks to alleviate poverty and empower the local community. Led by director Richard Jean-Baptiste, the organization provides food, shelter, education, and spiritual support. It operates various programs including a foster program, student sponsorships, English classes, and job skills training. The organization aims to expand its outreach and build additional facilities like a medical clinic. It welcomes volunteers and financial support to continue and grow its ministries.

The 25 member Coyaction volunteer team plans events, runs sessions, recruits for the National Citizen Service, and engages in political and democratic activities. The group aims to expand music opportunities and has seen some members perform locally. Community of Youth expresses gratitude to its funders and supporters for enabling its youth programs.

During COVID-19, it has adapted programs to online and distanced formats while reopening its thrift store and hospice centre with safety protocols.

Locally, they have built 19 homes since 1996 helping 20 families in Barron County. They describe how partnering with families to build homes provides stability and opportunities to improve lives. Donations support their work building homes and communities both locally and internationally through their tithe program.

The Boston University China Care Fund is a student-run organization that aims to empower youth and fund life-changing surgeries for Chinese orphans. They do this through various community service programs, fundraising events, and social events. Their community service programs include mentoring local immigrant students, volunteering at an after-school program, and coordinating a playgroup for adopted Chinese children. Their fundraising events include annual dance and talent shows to raise thousands for the China Care Foundation. Students are encouraged to get involved through various volunteering and leadership opportunities.

Giles Piercy from Locality Matters gave a presentation about their work with the White City Estate community in London. They have taken over running services like the community center and parenting programs. Locality Matters is also exploring taking on more services from the local council like social care, repairs, and reviews of all council services. Some key lessons they have learned include having a strong community leader, acquiring a community asset like the center, replacing rather than augmenting existing services, improving branding and marketing, choosing attractive services to take over, and working from an asset-based view of the community's skills rather than focusing on deficiencies. Their goal is to empower the community to better deliver and manage local services.

Funding priorities for – Nelson Community Panel • A - Improving outcomes for young people • B – Improving outcomes for older people • C – Bringing different communities within the ward together • D – Improve provision for the unemployed • E – Improve the local environment ***If you meet one or more of these Priorities then you can apply*** 4
