Session goals
•  Checking in with the audience
•  Conceptual framework
•  D/deaf identity–terms and concepts
•  Implications for higher education
Checking in with the audience
•  What do you know about deaf and hard of
hearing people?
•  What do you hope to learn from this
session?
Conceptual framework
Understanding the development of identity in deaf
individuals within hearing and Deaf contexts by
applying:
•  A bilingual, multicultural perspective
•  Drawing on constructs from:
–  Social Constructivism
–  Symbolic interactionism theory
Social Constructivism
•  Individual learns through group interactions
•  Access to a community and its culture is essential for an
individual’s understanding of themselves and the world
•  A group creates its reality, and essentially its culture,
through their interactions and collective interpretation of
their environment and its stimuli
•  Access to these interactions is mediated by language;
each individual must have unhampered access to that
shared language!

deafness vs. Deaf
•  Medically-oriented term
•  A state; condition
•  Diagnosis
•  Abnormality
•  Handicap/disability
•  Individualism
•  Cultural and linguistic
•  Way of “being”
•  Normality
•  Recognized
•  Beliefs and values
•  Collectivism
Is sign language universal?
VIDEO
Symbolic interaction theory
•  Feedback from others affects how individuals see
themselves, use language, and make sense of the
world
•  Social interactions shape Individual development and
identity formation
•  We learn to behave as others expect us to behave,
according to designated societal or community roles
•  The beliefs and values that a community develops are
comprised of the beliefs and values of its members
VIDEO
Without a legitimately recognized
language, there is no culture; without a
culture, there is no self-identity; without a
self-identity, you just go on trying to be
what others demand you to be.

Optimizing equity and inclusion in
higher education for deaf and
hard of hearing students
At Gallaudet, [being Deaf] isn’t an issue. You
don’t even think about it. Students can pay
attention to accounting or psychology or
journalism. But when a deaf person goes to
another college, no matter how supportive it
is, that person doesn’t get the same access.
I. King Jordan, President Emeritus
Gallaudet University
