Rachel Sigley completed a cooperative education internship at NBC Universal from January to May 2007. She gained valuable experience in areas such as corporate communications, writing, marketing research, and event planning. She learned about the entertainment industry and was able to determine it is a field she would like to work in. The internship provided hands-on learning that supplemented her classroom education and allowed her to develop professional skills. Rachel believes the internship was extremely beneficial and worth the experience.

2. On January 8, 2007 my internship began at NBC Universal. For years I had grown up watching the station and now I was going to get the chance to see how all of the “magic” happened. I did not know what to expect, but looking back between day one and now, taking the internship at NBC has been one of the best choices I have made during my academic years. Over the last several months I have had the opportunity to gain a lot of experience in the business world beyond what the classroom has been able to adequately teach me and I am hoping to properly convey in the rest of my presentation just how great those experiences have been. 9. Writing When two new NBC shows were set to premiere with characters both of whom were detectives in their own way, I was asked to write a piece introducing the two new shows. Then prior to the shows premiere on NBC, the story was posted on the company intranet for all employees to see

10. Writing Following one of the most successful international box office launches in recent times, I was asked to compile a brief piece outlining the details of the launch of Universal’s latest comedy “Hot Fuzz” to be included in the companies bi-weekly News, Views & Happenings newsletter.

14. I did not want to get my hopes up about what to expect, nor did I have any clue what my time at NBC would hold so I did not go into my internship with many expectations. My biggest objectives were my hope to gain more experience in a corporate environment and perhaps narrow down where it is I would like to work when I have completed by business degree Throughout the course of the spring semester I grew a lot and was able to gain a lot from the experiences afforded to me as a result of being at NBC Cooperative Education Learning Objectives

15. I gained the ability to feel more comfortable in a corporate environment. While I did not overcome my shyness as much as I had hoped, I do feel I will be more capable of being successful in my future corporate experiences. 17. Prior to working at NBC I had spent a year as an intern at Morgan Stanley. NBC taught me that not all companies have the same corporate environment. 18. One of the things I enjoyed most about working at NBC is that everybody was friendly and always willing to help me in no matter what it was I sought help in. 19. Watched history in the making as Jeff Zucker replaced Bob Wright as President of NBC Learned a lot in the field of marketing (my concentration) through watching the NBC LA Development Broadcast Work Experience Analysis

20. Some days were harder then others. Some days were hectic. Some days were boring. However, everyday in some way turned into a learning experience for me and taught me things that would take weeks to properly convey in a classroom, if it was even possible. If I was in the position of having the opportunity to do it all over again, I would without hesitation. I am thankful for having the opportunity and would think that anybody given the chance to intern for a company like NBC Universal (or a chance in any industry they are interested in) they should give it a chance. Was it worth it?
