INTRODUCTION
Resources are the sources of supply or support; generally held in reverse. They
include useful information, materials or services. Resources include the wisdom,
knowledge, experience, expertise, labor, etc. of mankind. Natural resources are
the naturally occurring substances of the biosphere which can support and
sustain life. In other words, they are nature’s resources which support life on
earth. They include the goods and services provided by natural environment.
The survival and success of mankind depends upon the availability,
conservation, recycling and replacement of natural resources. Solar energy, soil,
air, wind, water, mineral deposits, fossil fuels and living organisms are vital
natural resources. Many of these resources are only limited in stock, so that may
risen down due to constant use. To make the situation worse, modern civilization
demand the over exploitation and over wastage of natural resources. This may
cause irreversible qualitative degradation of natural environments.
3
TYPES OF WATER RESOURCES
PONDS
Pond is a small, shallow, stagnant and isolated fresh water body, which can
remain almost unaffected by changes in the external environment. It is a typical
self sufficient and self regulating lunatic ecosystem, characterized by gentle
water, low salinity. Low pressure, low water transparency, low wave action, high
turbidity, high resistance to temperature, reduced light penetration, absence of
currents, etc.
Based on origin, three kinds of ponds can be recognized, namely
1. Ponds derived from large lakes
2. Ponds having no connection with lakes at any time
3. Artificial or manmade ponds.
IMPORTANCE OF PONDS
 Ponds are most commonly used for recreation, swimming, nature viewing.
Boating and fishing are popular activities that take place.
 Ponds also provide a water supply to agricultural, domestic and industrial
uses.
 Freshwater sources are best to use for drinking water. The water from
lakes and ponds is treated and purified and then distributed to local
residents and businesses.
 Lakes and ponds are a wild life habitat for many different species. They
also support and regulate the services of soil formation, bio diversity,
ground water recharge, and flood protection.
4
RIVERS
A river is a natural water course, usually fresh water, flowing towards an ocean, a
sea or another river. In some rare cases a river could flow into the ground and dry
up completely at the end of its course, without reaching another body of water.
Rivers are also classified into different types, and they are
1. Permanent rivers
2. Periodic rivers
3. Episodic rivers
4. Exotic rivers
IMPORANCE OF RIVERS
 Rivers provide habitat, nourishment and means of transport to countless
organisms.
 They provide travel routes for exploration, commerce and recreation.
 They leave valuable deposits of sediments, such as sand and gravel.
 They form vast flood plains where many of our cities are built.
 Their power provides much of the electrical energy we use in our everyday
life.
5
SEAS
The sea, the world ocean or simply the ocean, is the connected body of salty
water that covers 70.8% of the earth’s surface. The sea moderates the earth’s
climate and has important roles in the water cycle. Carbon cycle and nitrogen
cycle.
IMPORTANCE OF SEA
 The sea is an essential aspect of human trade, travel, mineral extraction
and power generation.
 They are essential components of earth’s eco system and are critical for
global food security and for sustaining economic prosperity and well being
of many national economies.
 The deep sea is increasingly being targeted by commercial fisheries, both in
national waters and on the high seas.
 As a vast highway for commerce, seas provide a place for both recreation
and waste disposal.
 Biological products such as pearls taken from oysters are used in jewelry,
and shells and coral have been widely used as a source of building material.
6
CONCLUSION
Water is an indispensable requirement for life on earth and earth is the only
planet known to contain liquid water in substantial quantities. Water is directly
involved in all the life processes of organisms and no organism can exist on earth
without water. Water resources are the major constituent of the hydrosphere
which includes oceans, seas, brackish water bodies, fresh water bodies such as
lakes, ponds and rivers etc. Approximately 70.8% of the earth’s surface is
submerged in water. Mankind has been using water resources for various
domestic and recreational processes, agriculture, industry, hydro power
generation, food sources, etc. It is very important to protect our naturally
occurring water resources.

  • 7. 6 CONCLUSION Water is an indispensable requirement for life on earth and earth is the only planet known to contain liquid water in substantial quantities. Water is directly involved in all the life processes of organisms and no organism can exist on earth without water. Water resources are the major constituent of the hydrosphere which includes oceans, seas, brackish water bodies, fresh water bodies such as lakes, ponds and rivers etc. Approximately 70.8% of the earth’s surface is submerged in water. Mankind has been using water resources for various domestic and recreational processes, agriculture, industry, hydro power generation, food sources, etc. It is very important to protect our naturally occurring water resources.
