Objectives
At the end of the report, the students will be able
to:
a.) identify what is river and determine the
different organisms living in it;
b.) determine some issues with regards to the
human activities in destroying and taking good
care of the river;
c.) appreciate the benefits of rivers that it can give
to humans and other living creatures;
d.)draw a picture in a sheet of short bond paper
that portrays ways on how humans should take
good care of the river within 15 minutes.

Formation
A river forms in a , a large area of land
from which water contributes to only
one stream or river. A watershed is
bounded by the ridges or hilltops that
divide it from adjacent watersheds, or
drainage basins.

I. Definition
RIVER
A river is a natural flowing watercourse,
usually freshwater, flowing towards
an ocean, sea, lake or another river.
-Wikipedia
any body of fresh water flowing from an
upland source to a large lake or to the
sea, fed by such sources as springs and
tributary streams. -Microsoft ® Encarta ® 2009.
© 1993-2008 Microsoft Corporation. All rights
reserved.)
BENEFITS/IMPORTANCE
Rivers are important to humans
because they supply fresh drinking
water, serve as home for important
fisheries, provide transportation
routes, and are the source for
irrigation water and hydroelectric
power.
- Microsoft ® Encarta ® 2009. © 1993-2008 Microsoft

Farming
River valleys and plains provide
fertile soils. Farmers in dry regions
irrigate their cropland using water carried
by irrigation ditches from nearby rivers.
 Energy
During the early industrial era, mills,
shops, and factories were built near fast-
flowing rivers where water could be used to
power machines. Today steep rivers are still
used to power hydroelectric plants and
their water turbines.
III. Organisms
Life in a River
 Mosses anchor themselves to rocks.
 Trout and minnows are adapted to the cold, oxygen rich
water.
 Plankton can float in the warmer, calmer waters.
 Plants here can set roots in the river’s rich sediment.
 Fish such as catfish and carp also live in these calmer
waters.
 Crayfish
 shrimp
 lobster and certain crab species
 Alligators and crocodiles
 Platypuses
 Frogs and turtles
Plants
River grassess
such as:
• Reeds
• Sedges
IV. ISSUES
 Industries use river water in manufacturing
processes and as receptacles for wastes.
 People have used rivers to dispose of their sewage
and garbage.
These practices have polluted rivers with toxins, which
have killed river organisms and made river fish
inedible.
Today, runoff from the land puts pesticides and other
poisons into rivers and coats riverbeds with toxic
sediments.
ISSUES
 Can we now be optimistic about the Pasig River?
BY RACHEL A.G. REYES, TMT ON AUGUST 8, 2016
- (MANILA TIMES)
Manileños have romanticized the Pasig River for
generations. They imagine an idyllic time when they could
enjoy fishing, boating and swimming in the river.
Paintings and old photos depict these seemingly halcyon
times. Studies have shown that the Pasig River once
supported 25 species of fish and many types of aquatic
plants. But one would need to think very far back into the
past to reach the river’s happy period. People already
thought the Pasig was disgusting two centuries ago.
SUMMARY
The river is one of the parts of the natural
ecosystem that flows to another and wider
source of water like oceans and seas. One of
the benefits of it is that it serve as a source of
irrigation water for most farmers. Some of the
animals that inhabit the river are crabs, catfish,
frogs, and alligators. Unfortunately, there are
issues or human activities concerning the
destruction of river ecosystem like some people
nowadays used rivers to dispose of their
sewage and garbages.
EVALUATION
1. What is the essential element of a river?
2. Write down one issue on destroying the
river as mentioned in the report.
3. Give at least one benefit of river that we
could get from it.
4. Give at least 3 animals that inhabit in
the river.
5.What is the largest river in the
Philippines ?
