Why is the NDACAN Important?
The NDACAN promotes scholarly exchange
among researchers in the child maltreatment
fields.
Provides data analysis opportunities to
researchers through conference workshops
and its annual Summer Research Institute.
Allows secondary analysis for the datasets.
Who Collects?
The NCANDS consist of datasets of State-
specific data of all investigated reports of
maltreatment, to State child protective service
agencies.
It is a federally-sponsored national data
collection effort created for the purpose of
tracking the volume and nature of child
maltreatment reporting each year within the
United Stated.
What is the difference between data,
dataset, and findings?
Data is referred to as the organized observations
of a study in an electronic form. For example,
survey responses.
A dataset includes the data in SPSS or SAS format,
a data codebook, and a brief guide which
addressed secondary analysis issues concerning
that study.
Findings summarize the outcome of a study and
are described in a study’s final report and other
publications. For example, a journal article.
Access
The National Data Archive of Child Abuse and
Neglect has made the data available to the
research community.
Datasets are free of cost.
It takes most datasets within 3 business days
to electronically deliver. There is a review of
application and data protection plans done
before ordering that takes anywhere from 1 to
2 weeks.
How to get Involved?
For those who are concerned with research
issued in child abuse and neglect and
preventions, there is a maintained list serve
called the Child-Maltreatment-Research-L
(CMRL).
This list serve is an emailing subscription that
offers all child abuse and neglect researchers
the opportunity to share and obtain research
information in a moderated exchange.
Research Question…
What are ways to help prevent or end child abuse and
neglect?
How can we better identify families who are at risk in
order to inhibit later abuse and guide prevention
efforts?
If a child is abused, does that mean that they are going
to abusive later on in future relationships?
Are all families being treated?
Hypothesis
If relationships develop with the children who
have been neglected and abused in later
years, then I believe that these same children
will have future problems in relationships as
father/mother relationships with their
children such as more physical violence,
substance abuse, rape, sexual molestation,
and/or emotional reliance on their child.
Research Method
 Population of interest: Victims of Child Abuse
 Where will gather sample participants? 500 male participants will
be given the survey, 250 who have never been victims of child
abuse, and 250 others who are in the NDACAN database who
consent. 500 female participants will be given the survey, 250 who
have never been a victim of child abuse or neglect, and 250 other
who are in the NDACAN database who consent. All participants will
be a parent.
 How will gather sample participants? Survey will be given to each
participant.
 How long? One week.
 Research Method:
 Independent variable: problems in relationships when becoming
mother/father
 Dependent Variable: Victims of abuse from the NDACAN
Research Method
Correlational Study- You can expect to see a
strong positive correlation between future
violence and neglected children.
Regression Analysis- explains and predict that
relationships with domestic violence, rape, or
assault depend on the adults childhood
experience with neglect and abuse.
