Myths and legends stories were presented along with summaries of some common myths. Pandora's box myth was summarized, describing how Pandora opened a box containing evil that was released upon the world, but hope remained inside. Norse mythology and some key gods like Thor and Loki were briefly introduced. Summaries of other myths included the Minotaur, Medusa, Trojan War, and the myth of Narcissus where he falls in love with his own reflection and dies.

The Aeneid and The Divine Comedy
The labyrinth of initiation, the underworld, and the sacred grove
Publius Vergilius Maro
70 – 21 BCE
Virgil was regarded by the Romans as their greatest poet.
His influence on Dante and Western literature, like that
of Ovid, is profound. The Aeneid is his most famous work
and became Rome’s national epic.
The son of a farmer in northern Italy, Virgil came to be
regarded as one of Rome's greatest poets. Virgil devoted
his life life to poetry and to studies connected with it. He
never married, and the first half of his life was that of a
scholar and near recluse. But, as his poetry won him
fame, he gradually won the friendship of many important
men in the Roman world.

Dante Alighieri
1265 – 1321 CE
Dante Alighieri was born in Florence, Italy to a notable family of modest
means. His mother died when he was seven years old, and his father
remarried, having two more children.
Dante was never married to his “Beatrice.” They met twice, at a nine
year interval (although it might be a symbolic time period). They were
both married to other people, and she died at 25. But he continued to
write about throughout his life. We consider his love for her to be a
type of “courtly love.” It is otherworldly and has a spiritual aspect.
His most famous work is the Divine Comedy. The story begins when he
finds himself lost in a woods in middle age. Virgil finds him and leads
him through hell and purgatory. Beatrice is his guide in Paradise.
(adapted from poets.)
Dante is very important to western literature.
T. S. Eliot claimed:
Dante and Shakespeare divide the world between them, there is no third.
And Virgil is very important to Dante.
Dante, addressing Virgil in Canto 1 of the Divine Comedy: Thou art my master.
We will start with The Aeneid.
Who is Aeneas?
There are multiple myths about the founding of Rome. One very
important one is told in The Aeneas, the story of a Trojan prince who
brought together the survivors from Troy. They boarded ships and
sailed in search of a new home. The Aeneid tells their story, focused
of course on their leader.
As The Aeneid opens, Aeneas and the Trojans come to Carthage,
where he falls in love with the Queen Dido. His bliss is short lived, as
he is told by the gods that he must leave her. Our reading, Book 6,
comes half way through the story. Aeneas’s father has died along the
way, and Aeneas wants to see him. To do that, he must descend into
the underworld—and come back. Very few have ever made the round
trip journey. He is guided by the priestess of Apollo.
The Temple of Apollo built by Daedalus.
Book 6 of The Aeneid gives an elaborate description of
how Daedalus had depicted the story of Theseus, the
minotaur, Ariadne, and his escape from Crete on the
doors.
Aeneas must go through these doors, get advice from
the Sybil, enter the wood sa.

Developing the language skills is an important requisite for people of any walk of life. We can develop it in many ways. One of the ways is story telling and I have used this at one of my recent seminars conducted at START Calicut.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

18. THE MYTH OF NARCISSUS
Once upon a time there was a beautiful looking boy. He had long, flowing hair; beautiful, bright, blue
eyes and even, white teeth. Many young ladies fell in love with him including the nymph, Echo. Nymphs were
lively spirits who lived near streams and lakes and protected trees in the forest. Echo had upset the queen of
the gods, Hera. As a punishment Hera made Echo unable to speak except to repeat the last three words of
theperson she was talking to.
Poor Echo fell in love with Narcissus but could never tell him how she felt. Narcissus teased her and she ran
away with tears pouring down her face. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, saw what happened and decided to
punish Narcissus. As he came to a pool of water, he saw his reflection and fell in love with the vision he saw …
Poor Narcissus watched his own reflection, but every time he tried to
touch the face of the vision he loved,
the image disappeared. Narcissus stopped eating, lost his beautiful
looks and pined for his love. Eventually he faded away and died.
Aphrodite took pity on him and made a flower grow in his place on
the bank of the lake.
Narcissus flowers can be found to this day growing wherever you
can find water and trees.
19. NARCISSUS IN THE HISTORY OF ART
As with most myths, this story is an extreme version of modern realities, but lesson is there: be KIND to others,
be OPEN-MINDED to love and affection from others, and remember that LOOKS ARE NOT everything. Do
not become obsessed with your own appearance and focus on your inner self and others,
