GENRE: MysteryA mystery is a story in which the characters and the reader must use clues to find the explanation for a troubling event. In the beginning, the author describes a puzzling situation. The characters in the story try to find out who did something or how it happened.
STRATEGY: Make Inferences Authors do not always directly tell the reader everything that is happening in a story. Good readers use their own prior knowledge and clues from the text to make inferences, or draw reasonable conclusions about the characters and the plot. To make inferences, readers analyze, or think critically about, the characters’ experiences and compare these to their own experiences.
SKILL: Problem and Solution In most plots, the main character has a problem that he or she takes actions to solve. By the end of the story, the character usually finds a solution to the problem.
