3. My dad reads this article about coding bootcamps and he
talked about how they might useful for me since I had already
decided at that point I would majoring in Computer Science.
I was about to start my senior year in high school and at that
point decided I wasn’t prepared enough to attend a coding
bootcamp yet but held some hope for the future.
my actual facial expression
when my dad introduced me
to the idea of coding
bootcamps
5. DA R N .
I’m feeling more confident about my abilities with
coding and getting tired of being lonely in the learning
process, I decide to finally go for it and apply to
several coding bootcamps to attend for the summer of
2014.
In the end, it didn’t work out because I
ended up having to take yet another
college course for me to graduate a
year earlier, but I learned a lot in the
process!
7. It’s October 2014. I’m going for it again, and this time, no excuses. I
decided to narrow my search down to make sure the bootcamp had
the following…
Excellent Reviews - digging through
Yelp, Quora, CourseReport, SwitchUp,
etc.
Excellent Hiring Rate - I may not be
looking for a job at the time, but I will
be in the near future and I want to be
prepared!
Full-stack and JavaScript focused - I
prefer JS over Ruby
8. I ended up getting accepted to
over 5 coding bootcamps and
decided to attend
Fullstack Academy’s first ever
Summer of Code cohort! 🌞
11. What Fullstack is looking for in their students…
Passion for coding
You have demonstrated
your passion by
beginning to learn on
your own, and are
determined to become a
developer whether you
get into Fullstack or not.
"No asshole rule"
Fullstack lives by a no-
asshole policy. They
look for students who
are considerate,
understanding, helpful
and generally pleasant
to be around.
Growth Mindset
Whatever you have
worked on so far, you
have strived for
excellence. You are
focused on growth for
yourself and others
24. In the 6 week long Junior
Phase, students learn computer
science concepts and best
practices with some of the best
instructors in the industry.
25. During workshops in the
Junior Phase, students pair-
program to put the concepts
they learned into practice.
26. Every cohort has
fellows that help out
students.
These were the
fellows for my
cohort.
They were pretty
awesome.
27. Being part of the Summer of Code
program, I found myself surrounded
with awesome folks from top
universities… 🎓
28. Alfonso Anna Annie Christian
Frances Gavin Jack Joanna
Jovia Nirmohi Thang Will
29. Most days in my junior
phase involved
hardcore learning as
much as I could
Monday through Friday
of each week for 8
hours a day.
30. But it wasn’t just about coding
all the time. Every week, I would
hang out with my learning team
during lunch and play Avalon.
We had so much fun together! 😂
40. Students are
invited to
participate in in-
house hackathons
at Fullstack, like
the Tessel
Hackathon!
Look, it’s Kaito and Jovia from my learning team! 😎
41. Students are also
required to create
a Tech Talk, a
presentation on
something they’d
like to teach their
fellow classmates
about within the
web dev field.
I did my Tech Talk on Web Design! 🎨
42. On the last day of the Summer
of Code program, students
present their final capstone
projects to friends and family!
47. Once I finished Fullstack, I
calculated how much I spent
on food, housing, etc. using
Mint… 💸
48. May 11th to June 8th
4 weeks prep work online
~40 hours
June 8th to August 26th
11 weeks on-campus
Monday through Friday
9:30 am to 6:30 pm
~9 hours/day
~45 hours/week
15 weeks - 650 hours - $14K
49. I then calculated how much I would
have theoretically spent on my
college tuition for the same
duration (thankfully I have a
scholarship). 🏫
52. Since graduating, I’ve blogged extensively about my Fullstack Academy
experience, mentored a lot of folks wanting to get into coding
bootcamps, was featured on Course Report as SOC alum, and have
given talks at conferences about coding bootcamps.
56. I’m an
Ambassador for
Fullstack Academy! 😊
So if you're interested in learning more about the program
and how to best prepare for the interview, feel free to
personally reach out to me. I'd be delighted to walk you
